The Federal Government had in 1999 introduced the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme to provide free primary and junior secondary education for all. Still, the cost of attending public schools varies by state such that while Ekiti and many other states have abolished school fees, pupils in other states pay fees to access schools.Source: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/delta-says-public-schools-pupils-shouldnt-pay-fees.html |

Man people's ignorance allows them to be taken advantage of by crooks. Honestly people need to grow a spine and not let themselves be taken advantage of. You would think taxes would cover all these basic expenses. These scammers need to punished. Comrade Pat Ochei said the head teacher shouldn't have been punished for the illegal school fees collection rather, the education authorities must be held accountable. We have sanctioned school heads and CIEs; some were demoted, others were withdrawn from urban to rural areas, while CIEs have been recalled from their duty posts," Ebie revealed. What absolves the teacher of responsibility? The head teacher knowingly collected illegal fees. The state should fire frauds instead of reshuffling them. |

Most of these so called free school are in a pathetic condition. Sometimes I don't blame the teachers for requesting exam fees from pupils. Many a time, these schools don't even get a dime from the government as operational funds. These government officials should stop doing eye service and man up to their portfolios. |

![]() I have always believed it that civil servants were more brutally corrupt than the politicians, only that policians have access to more and that makes them very lousy. Even under the very nose of the law, you would be charged #1500 for an affidavit even when its #100, police would charge you for bail and claim its free. Regarding Education sector, Nigerians needs to understand that Awolowo's style of Free education is gone for good. as we were just a little over 40million then and every household contributed to our national earning tthrough cash crop production and individual tax, and land use tax, Now we are 200million with everybody depending on Niger-delta oil revenue to survive The Educational sector needs to be re-organized in a way that a parent should also contribute as little as #3000 a year for a students developmental levy, this money should be controlled by a governing board of Parents, Principal, Student representative, Alumnis, and ministry of education and the fund should be used to maintain the school structure every term break so as not to have structures deteriorating. Any student that his/her parent can't afford #3000 a year should be tested to ascertain his / her level of seriousness and placed on scholarship if it was confirmed that the parents are truly poor.. . |

What's the minister for education doing? Do they want to focus on tertiary institutions only? Just look at the kinds of rackets going on in the education sector. From snake swallowing money to Jamb declaring 6 billion instead of the usual expected 300 million. Corruption has really eaten deep into our system. |

"My child once told me of exam fees and when I got to the school, the head teacher denied asking for the fee. Even when my daughter pointed out the teacher, she denied it. Since then, they never troubled my daughter and I never paid any such money,".... That reminds me of my parents and their threat to drag the headmistress and my class teacher to the then Shomolu school management board! Public school teachers are scared of parents who know their rights! |

I went to school in delta State, all the schools in my area were in good condition, just overwhelmed by student's population. The real problem in schools and indeed public infrastructure in Nigeria is maintance culture, this administration will come and renovate and the next will still come and renovate the same school, students are very destructive due to several factors including hatred for their teachers |

Blue3k2:Okay, so it's the teachers fault also that many more schools are in dilapidated states? They have hurriedly fix success school because it went viral while leaving hundreds in poor state. |
| Re: Nigeria: Delta Says Public Schools' Pupils Shouldn't Pay Fees by Blue3k2(op): 7:27am On Mar 29, 2019 |
SmartMen:The dilapidated schools just reflect the ineptitude of the society. They pay taxes with nothing to show, the teachers union dont complain instead opting to extort parents. After they'll reelect these clowns. Nigerian government officials only react to being shamed and exposed. Lol even opposition candidates aren't smart enough to call out these issues. They dont care and the voters dont make it election issue. |

Nteogwuija:exactly, the school that don't have printer or even a photocopier, u are asking the teacher to print report cards or type exam with his/her money.... Government is almost a failure in Nigeria, delete own is worst. |
