PEUGEOT 301: FIRST GENERATION.

So, I was given the above to check out, drive and publish an unbiased review on him. Well, I don't do review on Peugeot vehicles, instead, appreciations. However, it doesn't mean I would spare Peugeot in aspects of lions that reflect overdose French wine.

The one I got had 1.6 liter VTi engine, an EC Engine, specifically EC5. It posses maximum of about 115 horsepower, very good for the size of the lion. Though, there is another Engine option, the 1.2 liter VTi Engine with maximum of about 72 hp (actually a 3-cylinder engine), that comes only in manual transmission. The EC5 Engine looks no different from TU5JP4, a common engine found in 307. I mean, there is no visible difference between the two, which makes you wonder why Peugeot changed the name. Of course, it's not identical to TU5JP4 (even though it says otherwise from appearance). EC5 has VVT solenoid, which TU5JP4 lacked (at least, I haven't seen TU5JP4 with one). Some may argue the engine cooling system thermostats are different, but I have seen TU5JP4 engine in Peugeot 206 with same thermostat housing on EC5 in 301. However, the timing belt kit is the same with TU5JP4, same with MAP sensor, intake manifold, spark plugs, etc. The Valeo injection system of the 301 is good. If the EC5 engine can be this good, then the 1.2 liter VTi engine will be as well.

The 301 given to me for the review had AT8 4-speed automatic gearbox. Good enough, the recommended oil for the transmission is Mobil LT71141 or Peugeot part number 9730 AE, same ATF recommended for AL4 and 4HP20 gearboxes. Of course, there is option of 5-speed manual, which I wished was the one given to me for the review, haven't seen a 301 PAN production with ECS and manual transmission though. But it exist outside Nigeria.

One of the good things about the first generation Peugeot 301 is how roomy and spacious the interior is, especially the front. As tall as I am, I could comfortably stretch my legs, including operating driver's switches and gadgets control buttons on the dashboard comfortably without stretching hands. The Radio is another good quality gadget in 301. The sound quality was quite good and clear, even though it was not JBL (there could be one with JBL, but not the donor car for the review). Connecting phone to the radio via Bluetooth was easy and fast. Phone calls via the radio was pretty amazing (voice was clear and loud enough).

When you look at the lion from outside or afar, the boot looks small. But wait till you open and see for yourself. The boot size was bigger than you could imagine. You would be surprised if you are the type that travels a lot with huge luggage and the boot swallows everything and close comfortably.


ON THE ROAD: MASCULINE PERSPECTIVE.

Difference between a car Journalist and a hardcore Petrolhead is, the former talk more or focuses on gadgets & jingles in a car, while the latter's focus is behind the wheel: Driving. On the road, the 301 performance was wonderful. The suspension has the Peugeot signature: road handler. The EC5 engine was powerful enough for the lion and pulls very well. Except most times, I was wishing it was a manual transmission. The AT8 gearbox was ok, which is just like everyother automatic transmission and that could serve a lot of automatic transmission lovers very well. But for someone like me, it became boring to me at some point (I wonder how people survive driving these transmissions). However, the engine compersate by producing good torque and hp when press the throttle pedal a little bit harder.

The fuel consumption or economy is marvelous. With my observation, if this EC5 fuel economy is this good in 301, then the one with 3-cylinder Engine could cover about 2000 km on a 70 liter of fuel, hopefully. It is that good. Anyone that wants to spend less in fueling needs to consider 301 (no joke). I may not be a fan of green, but I appreciate the economy enough to point that out, for anyone it might interest.


ANNOYANCE:

This is not a about too much French wine, but PAN error. How on Earth did they choose not to include coolant temperature guage on instrument panel? It's there no one in PAN that considered Nigerian factor when deciding to leave out the gauge on the cluster? Nigeria, where cooling systems are abused with impunity and only saving grace is that gauge for the perpetuators and suddenly,PAN decided the gauge doesn't matter, meaning they didn't factor in 2nd hand value, which usually is when the butchering and abuse starts. Yes, I know the overheating warning sign for coolant temperature is there, but why do users have to wait till the warning starts before they know the temperature is too high? Don't tell me you can't find space to create or install that gauge, even if it's on dashboard and not instrument panel? Even if it's a standard in all 301, but Nigeria is a case study when it comes to car usage and/or maintenance and stuffs like this should have been discussed and explained to the management before the production commenced. PAN, get car people into your management.

For some reasons, Peugeot decided to relocate fuel tank filler to the left side, unlike the standard (right side) on the rest of modern lions. It may not be a big deal for someone switching from Asian cars, but constant lion users or Peugeot freaks would always be driving to wrong side in fuel stations whenever they want to fill up their fuel tanks. It's not a big deal though. It just can be annoying to some. PSA, Make up your mind which side you want to stick to.


VERDICT:

Would I advice, suggest or recommend 1st generation Peugeot 301 to anyone interested? Yes, I would. I can understand why Peugeot didn't want to do a Hatchback and SW 301. To me, Peugeot 301 serves as 308 Saloon. He handles greatly on both good and bad roads, irrespective of vehicle speed. Test drive and prove me otherwise.

In the hands of the wrong person, even a Wheel Barrow can disgrace u with electrical problems. This particular Peugeot is nt known for such, bear in mind you are buying a 3yrs 10months old vehicle.
