The recently published report by Steve Hanke, an economist from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, United State, listed Nigeria among the first ten (10) miserable countries in the world.

According to the report Venezuela was listed as the most miserable country in the world. Reacting to this Hanke said, “Venezuela holds the inglorious title of the most miserable country in the world in 2018, as it did in 2017, 2016, and 2015.”

However, Argentina jumped to the No. 2 spot after yet another peso crisis. Since its founding, Argentina has been burdened with numerous economic crises. Most can be laid at the feet of domestic mismanagement and currency problems (read: currency collapses).

Iran took third in the ranking, before Brazil that made it to the fourth position. Turkey took the fifth position as the giant of Africa Nigeria emerged sixth.

The Misery Index was calculated using economic indices including unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates.

For Nigeria, unemployment rate was the major contributing factor to its miserable state.

According to Hanke, “The first Misery Index was constructed by economist Art Okun in the 1960s as a way to provide President Lyndon Johnson with an easily digestible snapshot of the economy. That original Misery Index was just a simple sum of a nation’s annual inflation rate and its unemployment rate. The Index has been modified several times, first by Robert Barro of Harvard and then by myself.

My modified Misery Index is the sum of the unemployment, inflation and bank lending rates, minus the percentage change in real GDP per capita. Higher readings on the first three elements are “bad” and make people more miserable. These are offset by a “good” (GDP per capita growth), which is subtracted from the sum of the “bads.” A higher Misery Index score reflects a higher level of “misery,” and it’s a simple enough metric that a busy president, without time for extensive economic briefings, can understand at a glance.

The accompanying table contains Misery Index rankings for the 95 nations that report relevant data on a timely basis. For consistency and comparability, and with few exceptions, data were retrieved from the Economist Intelligence Unit.”

We have always been ranked high on negative rankings. God I know you have a purpose of making me a Nigerian by birth, please I need a country I can be proud of. This is not a country, he ha become a corporation with 36 branches. On a more serious note, this is the only country we have, if only the so called youths can be united to demand good leadership, we won't be here. So in summary its our fault. All you ipob, afonja and amajiri name calling fools here.

ANOTHER WORTHLESS AND STUPID LIST THAT ONLY AN IGNORANT FOOL CAN TAKE SERIOUSLY.

By this idiot's logic, life is happier for people in Somalia, Eritrea, Niger Republic, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Syria, Burkina Faso, Yemen, Sudan, Mali, Burma, Chad, Nepal, South Sudan, Bangladesh, than in Nigeria? Than in Brazil? Than in Turkey? Than in Argentina?

I mean, what kind of gross stupidity is this?

Has the DUNCE who wrote that list every stepped foot out of America?

Even worse are our ask-no-questions, dumb Nairalanders who simply swallow every negative news about Nigeria without questioning anything. MUMU PEOPLE.

RUBBISH.

If you notice, the countries on the top 6 of the list are these large developing nations like Brazil, Argentina, Nigeria, Turkey, etc. I'm surprised they didn't have China in there as well. The list is driven by geopolitics, not reality.

America is so paranoid that it sees these nations as potential threats to its hegemony, hence these ludicrous 'reports' they publish to distort reality and downgrade those nations. Nigeria for instance, is projected to become the 3RD most populous nation on earth after China and India, by 2050. Just 30 yrs from now. That's a big deal to bigwigs in the US and other western powers.

Venezuela has the world's largest oll reserves..... Brazil is the second largest economy in the Americas... Argentina is a growing economic threat, etc etc.

One way to curtail these places, in the US' eyes would be to paint them in the worst possible light, such as by claiming incredibly, that they are the ''most miserable places on earth''. More miserable than even war-torn hellholes!
