Let's express b, c, d and e in term of a..

1st eqn;
a+b+c+d+e=169,

2nd eqn;
a+b = 98;
therefore, b = 98 - a ...........**


3rd eqn;
b+c = 90,
therefore, c = 90 - b
but, b = 98 - a, !(from 2nd eqn)
then, c = 90 - (98 - a)
c = a - 8 ............***

4th eqn;
c+d = 50,
d = 50 - c,
but c = a - 8, !(from 3rd eqn)
therefore, d = 50 - (a - ,
d = 58 - a ...........****

5th eqn,
d + e = 33,
e = 33 - d
but d = 58 - a, ! (from 4th eqn)
therefore, e = 33 - (58 - a)
e = a - 25 .............*****


Now, slot in the values of a, b, c, d, e as in **, ***, ****, ***** in 1st eqn;

a+b+c+d+e=169,
a + (98 - a) + (a - + (58 - a) + (a - 25) = 169,
a + 98 - a + a - 8 + 58 - a + a - 25 = 169,
a + 123 = 169,
a = 169 - 123,
a = 46

then,
b = 98 - a = 98 - 46,
b = 52

c = a - 8 = 46 - 8,
c = 38

d = 58 - a = 58 - 46,
d = 12

e = a - 25 = 46 - 25,
e = 21



so, a = 46, b = 52, c = 38, d = 12, e = 21

An easy way.
Given that a + b = 98, b + c = 90, c + d = 50 & d + e = 33

Using the associative property of real numbers
a + (b + c) + (d + e) = 169 = a + (90) + (33) = a + 123
(a + b) + (c + d) + e = 169 = (98) + (50) + e = 148 + e
(a + b) + c + (d + e) = 169 = (98) + c + (33) = c + 131

∴ a = 46 , e = 21 & c = 38

a + b = 46 + b = 98 ∴ b = 52
c + d = 38 + d = 50 ∴ d = 12

∴ a = 46 , b = 52 , c = 38 , d = 12 & e = 21
