If you want this country to make progress, you will want to support the total humiliation of all corrupt people most especially the judges to deter corruption that has led the country to this abyss. If the revered judges who we run to for justice in the face of oppression and tyranny sell judgment, the country becomes a jungle where the highest bidder procures the juiciest judgment. You may claim they have nothing to prove his corruption but he cannot provide verifiable sources of the money found on him and the burden of proof is on him to prove the money is not from bribes.

MetaPhysical:
If he is allowed to resign as the CJN he can remain in practice as a lawyer until retirement and his entitlement kicks in. If his resignation is rejected he can opt for early retirement but if that is also rejected then he is in deep trouble. An indictment will de-bar and de-robe him, his entitlement is canceled and he could be sentenced to prison.

Its important that SS Governors lead a team to Buhari to concede Onnoghen's error and plead for mercy on him.

It's important to send strong signal with this Chief Justice to others in our several courts that they are not above the law. When Jonathan sacked Justice Salami, No team of SW Governors met with the Federal Govt at that time. So, let's not set a tribal precedence here. All the money he embezzled does not benefit any of Niger Delta people but only him and his family. Let him face the wrath of the law.
You see our problem in this country? And we are praying for a nation like USA, Canada and Germany but we don't want to go beyond emotions and do what they do to thieves.

How can you send Governors to go plead for a thief caught in the act? What's our problem nitori Olorun?

if buhari and Hus cohorts really have a case against the cjn, the efcc wud have stated that in the tribunal nt thus media trial, let the court decide, if the cjn is guilty set an example with him if he's. nt let him have u s full retirement benefits

No, he actually set a good example.
Look, no matter where I stand something does not seem right with the issue surrounding the embattled former CJ.
Are you now emphasizing that any time I am taking to court I can plead not guilty simply because 'I forgot'? Afterall "oga judge sir, your overall Oga at the top also forgot".... so me too I forgot. What will happen to all public officers both present and future ones who will intentionally skip asset declarations with an intention that if cought they will say they 'fogot'?
If road safety guys catch me due to expired documents, I should also tell them ' I forgot' and drive on?
Or if I am caught with an unlicensed gun I should plead that I forgot to legalise it? Lets not get blinded by political affiliation but use common sense to judge situations like this because we are talking about the overall leader in the judiciary not even a random bloke on the street.
If this issue was not known, its a different matter. But for the fact that it was in the open, then its unfortunate and have to face the consequences. Its as simple as that.

I don't think it was about stealing but about laid down procedures. It was during this that they started digging up dirts. Its normal in all facets of life .

Nigeria at large will take Buhari anti corruption fight serious when he start prosecuting kyari, tinubu bullion van, akpaboi, daura, kalu, obanikoro and investigate gandollar the way he did when fayose was still governor. If he can do all these, Nigerian at large will start taking him serious. for now his corruption fighting is nonsense and witch hunting to so many people.

Those issues are by the way and have no bearing with my point.. .and I don't know why you guys keep making this defeatist comment.
I only commented on a specific issue and do not have time to delve into an unrelated subject. Because, the more such issues are logically defended or explained, the accused/guilty will keep shifting the goal post.
Judges for example, their kids are not innocent of certain crimes, pastors as well their kids aren't holy. I won't then go about telling a judge why are you sentencing me to jail when your son committed the same type of offence and go scot free. Its a political issue so let them kill themselves. I marvel at the way you guys defend this people as if they are orphans, no kids no family to defend them. This mans kids might be in UK/US while you guys are here wasting away time and MB defending either the govt or the opposition. Shame.

And he shouldn't tender any resignation letter then. He should continue proving his innocence now. Even the NJC has found him guilty, they are just looking for a soft landing for him and save his image and career

The emboldened will surely happen in no distant time, but Onnoghen deserves no mercy.

A business man who deals in trading judgements deserve no mercy. Buhari's anti-corruption war will become an object of ridicule by Nigerians and the world at large.
This case should not be settled at the table of sentiment.

If the president accepts his resignation, then he has set a precedence that will send a message to the NJC and other judges that they can always get a soft landing from the president if found wanting and it will transcend the presidents own regime to an unforeseeable future. It will also send a bad signal to the world that corrupt judges can get away with malfeasance in Nigeria. A very bad message about country claiming to be fighting corruption if we think about it.

But if he refuse, it will send a message of seriousness about the fight against corruption and set a precedence that corrupt judges CAN and WOULD be dragged through the mud. It will also create fear that the EFCC is really watching.

Yes there may be free chest beating and few political grumbling but that will only be for a short time while the effect/precedence set good or bad will last for a very long time.

I think I am for the rejection and humiliation to set an example that no one is too big for the law to deal with.

Were they not chest beating at the initial time?
I still wonder how can the CJN who is a carreer civil servant be playing his job like he's a politician. He ought to know better that the judiciary has a precedence to keep about her officers. I'd expected him to fight to the logical end since he said he is innocent.
Can anyone spot the difference in his case and that of Justice Salami? I think we in the SS should put our thinking caps in the right position.

Absolutely! I agree.

Onnoghen took advantage of Lady Liberty's blindfold.

I do not want to take the pain of finding out if Onnoghen had sat as a judge and decided election trials in the past.

If this Onnoghen case happened in US lawyers will revisit cases ruled by him and resubmit briefs to get their clients out of prison or awarded some relief if the penalty was monetary.
