The government do not owe Chukwu or his friends any explanation, this is a capitalist country, the citizens elected their leaders to provide basic health care, if the so called leaders are not performing we should vote them out. we the citizens have failed and this the consequences. if Mr Chukwu is sponsored to USA on medical tourism by the state, what about my grandmother in the village? the system here in Nigeria needs fixing, that should be the issue and the government should be explaining how our health care sector is better than that of USA.

Very soon every seak celebrity will claim to have no money to go to haspital as the trend is already becoming a way in Nigeria.

I keep wondering what they did with their earnings in their prime.

I don’t think ex footballers are the responsibility of the government. The earned so much money while they were active and even got all kinds of ridiculous bonuses. If they had invested well, they won’t need any bail outs. The government should actually focus on setting up a healthcare system that benefits everyone. There are people that die from common malaria simply because they don’t have 1000 Naira to treat this.

The guys that played for Nigeria in the 70s and 80s didn't make money, most of them got 504 and plots of land as rewards..

Chairman Chukwu's had the luxury of coaching the super Eagles in 2004 and has held positions at Rangers management, I would expect him to foot his medical bills.

Still one of the greatest African defenders of all time, ask your parents. I wish him well..

Bro, the whole shit is quite appalling. Can you imagine, they stated above that his current position in the state civil service and the wages that come with it is enough to carter for his wellbeing yet they went ahead to spend millions on him. I might sound like a "saddist" but any footballer who got to Chukwu's status and suddenly can't foot his medical bills should be blamed up front and allowed to bear whatever consequence that comes from his inability to make hay while the sun shined! This is a man just who handled many managerial positions and still occupies an executive position till date. Go to the hospitals and see poor people wandering about the premises for lack of medical bills yet the govt does nothing. The state govt like playing to the gallery and being in the news. Gov. Ugwuanyi also gave 5m to Juhel Oil and gas,...

Nobody owes anybody shvt. Christian Chukwu excelled in his own way and lived life. That he was, at some point, a national player, a one time Kenyan National Team coach, means he once had a life but for where? They all come back as a destitute later after squandering their resources.

Then they come out later to blackmail the government of the day for turning a blind eye on them like the government didn't pay them for their services in those days.

Louis Adriano, the left footed Inter Milan and Brazil star is poor now and rolls in one of the Favelas Brazil. About three months ago, Ronaldinho was broke that all he had was some €5 in his pocket. You don't see these guys running to the government because they know no one owes them a thing.

The fall ill and suddenly can't foot their bills and then their families resort to blackmailing the government like its their birthright. I stopped pitying most of these so-called, one-time stars turned destitutes. The same thing with Bash Ali during Jonathan's era, making useless recordings that he has been abandoned.

What has he been doing with the 'token' he earns from the Rangers' Corporation? After wasting their lives out, they come around and disturb people. Chukwu and his family should go and sleep, abeg.

At the bolded, for what exactly? Juhel is a big man. He owns a pharmaceutical company.
Fire razed one of his petrol stations in the state and the gov gave him a cash "gift". That was during the electioneering periods though.

Ugwuanyi wants to use this one to collect shine again.

Ugwuanyi has more achievements on Nairaland'front page than in his state.

You're such a bloody liar, simply working for the opposition. It profits you nothing!!!

Suffice to say that it goes a long to tell about we Africans (Esp. those(we) South of the Sahara) and our 'sense of ENTITLEMENT'. These so called stars come cup in hand harassing the govt and the people even when they could not make any positive impact at the peek of their careers. Don't tell me playing for the national team is an IMPACT ,....THEY WERE PAID HANDSOMELY for that. Do players know what MINIMUM WAGE is about?

so why is using style to beg for money from nigerians if truly he is not a destitue?

Where did you see or hear Christian Chukwu begging for money for treatment?

Have you ever seen any Igbo sports celebrity go broke to the point of begging? They invest in their hey days unlike our celebrities from across the river who lavish theirs on owambe and ikebe.

I wonder why the private sector has not stepped in to set up some health/life insurance or general insurance scheme to take care of our sportsmen and performing artistes. No doubt the market is huge from Nollywod to soccer stars, all high net worth individuals. The government via the Legislature can step in to pass edicts to ensure compulsory insurance deductiins from earnings and entitlements (in the case of sportsmen on national assignments).

The fact of the matter is simple. If these public figures can demand for public assistance in times of crises and receive public funds in most successful appeal cases then the public has a right to demand for some sort of accoutability and probity when these folks are at the peak of their earning powers.

Just my thoughts. We cannot continue to suffer these recurring embarassing situations when social media especially is daily inundated with pictures and stories of celebrity extravagance.
