Van dijk should avoid getting into a one vs one situation to save himself from embarrassment.
The only way to stop messi is by cutting off the supply to him as much as possible, and to play as compact as possible, this would ensure he runs into a mass of bodies whenever he gets the ball and attempts to dribble forward.
The idea of using man marking on messi has not really been effective over the years.
