gidgiddy:The counter coup was led by Muritala Muhammed and others like Danjuma. As a result of the success of the coup, the plotters nominated Gowon to take over government after the British thwarted their initial intention of secession. gidgiddy:Gowon was chosen by consensus. Nigeria had no leader between July 29, 1966 and August 1, 1966. Three days. Ojukwu was senior to Gowon and was irked by the decision. He could not see himself answering sir to his junior. That was partly why it was difficult for them to have reasonable talks over the violence that erupted in the North against Southerners (the pogrom). That was why the Ghanaian government decided to act as mediator by bringing them to the Aburi conference. 11 Likes |
