President Mohammad Buhari last year declared June 12 as "democracy day", what this means is that the previous date of May 29th will no longer be recognized as a public holiday. I remember some lawyers saying that the national assembly need to pass this into law or something like that for it to take effects otherwise it's just a mere pronouncements by the President, as he does not have the constitutional powers to unilaterally create a national public holiday at will. With May 29 fast approaching, will the declaration made by Mr President last year still going to hold or are will heading for failed promised. |
