I called one mechanic on phone today, he was talking about temperature switch and fuel filter.

Nothing much wrong with your car pls, your fuel filter is about to kill your fuel pump. I use golf 3 too, anytime that change oil, I also check my fuel filter too.

Are there not other possible things that could be causing the challenge?

fuel filter is just #700 not thousand. Change first. Then, you will know the next step, but I'm sure is fuel filter.

Carbon buildup valve area causing loss of compression. decarbonize engine.

Carbonization is only a very remote cause.
It's not an everyday thing. That's why it's not part of routine maintenance in cars! Only done after about 50,000km.

@Op check your fuel pump first then temperature sensor!

I normally leave car for a week or 2 before using it due to my schedule. And I do just short trips, then till next 2 or 3 weeks. But it starts each time ONCE.(for the past 13 months)

But hard starting started recently.

I start and engine cranks fine but won't start.

After starting for about 12 times it starts and idles fine.

In between the 12 times, it may start for 2 secs and does " buru buru buru " and it offs. Even pressing gas pedal won't help it.

But if it starts eventually, it won't go off again till you finish your journey.

Engine is 1.8. I heard the carburretor is electric. Transmission is manual.

There is enough fuel and engine cranks fine.
Battery is good too!

What could be the issue please.

I don't know much about cars!
