Manchester United will have to settle for Europa League football next season after being held by a Huddersfield side who were relegated in March.

The Terriers had managed just four points in their previous 23 games - but watched by outgoing chairman Dean Hoyle, they earned a draw as Isaac Mbenza's first goal for the club levelled Scott McTominay's first-half effort.

In a frantic finish, young United substitute Tahith Chong had a shot saved and Paul Pogba hit the bar before David de Gea denied Karlan Grant a winner at the other end.

It means United have now gone five games without a win, their worst sequence since they went eight games without a victory under Louis van Gaal between November and December 2015.

The result means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side cannot catch either Chelsea or Tottenham and have only a slim chance of finishing above Arsenal in fifth.

Alexis Sanchez is also a major doubt for the final game of the season against Cardiff at Old Trafford, having limped straight down the tunnel after suffering an injury at the start of the second half.

Huddersfield are 11 points adrift at the bottom of the table and finish their season at Southampton next Sunday. United remain sixth and entertain Cardiff.

Sanchez woes continue
Sanchez was given his first start since 2 March as fellow strikers Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial were both missing through injury.

The Chilean is in the spotlight before a close season in which Solskjaer has already pledged extensive rebuilding.

For a basic salary in excess of £300,000 - there are also substantial add-ons - a return of one goal and three assists in the Premier League this season is woeful. In addition, Sanchez's salary is not helping United in their contract negotiations with players such as David de Gea, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

Yet again, Sanchez was on the periphery, making the odd decent contribution but nothing of great note until he succumbed to injury after 54 minutes.
In contrast, both De Gea and Mata had a more meaningful impact.

De Gea, under scrutiny after a string of disappointing mistakes, twice saved well from Karlan Grant, whilst Mata was by far United's most creative player and almost set up an opportunity for Pogba to double United's lead.

Pogba hit the bar in each half with curling shots but he was another highly-paid member of the United squad whose overall impact failed to match his reputation.

Bumpy summer ahead for Man Utd?
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was repeatedly shown looking stony-faced as the second half drew to a close - and with good reason.
Home-grown McTominay, United's April player of the month, was again the visitors' outstanding performer.

There was more than an element of luck about the Scotland midfielder's goal as Huddersfield keeper Jonas Lossl completely failed to deal with his shot from just inside the penalty area but there was an industry about McTominay's performance that his team-mates clearly lacked.

What had, barely six weeks ago, looked like being a summer of promise for United, now looks fraught with problems.

And, should Watford defeat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to earn a place in the Europa League group phase, United's lucrative pre-season tour will need to be cut short.

That is because United would have to start in the second qualifying round in July, requiring them to play on the same day as they are scheduled to face Tottenham in a pre-season game in Shanghai.

Man of the match - Scott McTominay (Man Utd)

'We don't deserve top four' - what they said

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: "It hurts whenever you don't win a game of football. In a stadium like this with loads of energy, their last game of the season at home, we gave them some hope and we couldn't reach our level again.

"There was always going to be a period in this game Huddersfield would press us because of the energy of the crowd. We had a spell we couldn't get going, now its done, we're disappointed but we have to look forward.

"We haven't deserved to be top four, we've chased the pack and been given chances, the league is so tight. When we got the opportunities we weren't able to really grab them. In the end, the table doesn't lie.

Oga don't forget it was Ole who even made United contest for d top 4 in d first place with his run of consecutive wins... Jose was having one of d worst runs United had seen so how would he had done any miracles?

How exactly is Mourinho beta? He took dis same team to d Champions league but U also forgot to include d fact dat d season he qualified dem for champions league he finished as runners up in d Premier league. Where was he on d league table and champions league before he was fired? U all now suddenly forget it was Ole's run of impressive wins dat got United back in d mix of d top 4 again. If Mourinho was still there Wolves would had overtaken United on d league table. De Gea was d one saving Mourinho's ass all d while and d same De Gea was d one who cost Ole some valuable points
Are the players not paid to play well. In my opinion no player does any coach any favour. They are paid well to get the job done.

pogba and rashfold must leave they are trash.

[s] man u should buy iwobe that guys is good with passes [/s]
Those two are not the only culprits. I will even excuse rashford because his workrate is above average.

The Team needs a complete overhaul. They don't play with passion and hunger to win. Only few guys like hererra, lingard, and maybe Mata should be considered.

Oga, what are you saying? He took the team to the Champions league, played well, even defeated Juventus in one of the encounters. The season before that, he was second when Man city was invisible. He played in an FA Cup final against Chelsea in which Man U dominated but unfortunately lost. He won 3 major trophies in his debut season and you are still saying trash.

When Ole was hired, the players emotionally gravitated towards him just to show that Mourinho was the problem. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is over and the reality is back. Ole lacks the tactical acumen of Mourinho and never ever should the name Ole and Mourinho be mentioned in the same sentence. Despite the fact that Alex was giving him back up tactics from the background when he picked the job, the reality is back now. Ole is a weakling, he is not firm, he cannot control the players, he is pampering them and cannot go hard on them when they misbehave. You see the result? When Man U played against Ajax is in the final of the Europea league, told friends that, that team (Ajax) was too good with the way they move but Mou clipped their wings with his master stroke. You said DeGea was the one saving Mourinho's ass? He for dey open leg allow ball dey enter now. Is it not the work of a goalie to try and save balls. You lot sound stewpid most times when you come online to try and make sense just to discredit someone's work.
What is the Ole's run of impressive win you are refferring to? How many games has he played so far so good? how many has he won? how many did he draw? How many did he lose? What is his win ratio? undecided
You said my mind!!

Manchester United Player Earnings After 25 Percent Wage Cut Due To Failure To Make Champions League Football

Manchester United players would have their wages cut by 25% having failed to secure a place in next season’s Champions League competition.

Missing out on the Champions League could prove to be costly in terms of revenue for a club of Manchester United’s stature.

Arsenal’s operating profits fell by a gargantuan 60% when they failed to qualify for Europe’s most elite competition.

The Gunners played in the Europa league where the broadcasting and commercial revenues are only a fraction of what obtains in the Champions League leading to that considerable drop in their profits and overall revenue.

United might now suffer the same fate and have now taken a drastic measure to avoid such drop in revenues.

According to a report by DailyMail in April, all new contracts signed in Old Trafford had a clause in them that showed that players would lose 25% of their wages if the team failed to make Champions league qualification.

Woodward is respected for his business acumen, not footballing line, he is more interested in players that will appeal to american market for marketing, like lingard dancing and Lukaku looking sheepish.
If he was serious,he would have asked the players to get off social media, and work for their money, unfortunately their money is no more on the field but on the screens.

Woodward can be sacked and and will be sacked in due time.
United is no more the most valuable club in England.
...Your American owners only care about the money...Woodward will still be there and who will sack him?....Woodward serves as the chief executive of Manchester Utd overseeing the operations of the club...

How about that useless Lukaku that does not have ball control?
You are on point... Jesse Lingard is another waste of space in the Manchester United team... I really want those glorious days back..
