He recalled that recently various speakers and president of the African Development Bank (ADfB) had said that without a cost-effective tariff, which is the fundamental in the power sector, Nigeria may not be able to get uninterrupted power supply. And then there is this “DISCOS are supposed to use N305 per dollar to charge consumers for the power they are using, instead they are using N199 to a dollar, so if the equipment got by DISCOS goes for N360 per dollar, which is the open market rate, then there is a big issue, we can’t be using N199 for DISCOS to charge consumers whereas generation charge DISCOS at N305 per dollar, someone is losing money and it’s the DISCOS.In other words, DISCOS are being forced to pay for power production below the production cost...which is preventing them from making a profit..and making investment I know a lot of Nigerians are going to shout APC is evil and some will blame PDP...but the honest truth is, we cannot be underpaying our power sector and be exepcting improved power. The funny thing is that most Nigerians would compain if government forced them to sell below production price of their goods...but are not complaining when the same happens to power. We have to accept reality. Our oil revenue is low, and we are running into debt to stay above water. Let the DISOCS charge their prices, make their profit, and things will in time get better. Sorry, you can insult me, but fact is effing fact. |

That is the truth But electricity is not cheap. And you cannot be paying under the cost of production...and expect light 24/7 |

TOPCRUISE:1.Oil is at $80 per barrel. We need it at $140 per barrel before we can have a budget without borrowing 2.If you read the article, you would have come across this... “DISCOS are supposed to use N305 per dollar to charge consumers for the power they are using, instead they are using N199 to a dollar, so if the equipment got by DISCOS goes for N360 per dollar, which is the open market rate, then there is a big issue, we can’t be using N199 for DISCOS to charge consumers whereas generation charge DISCOS at N305 per dollar, someone is losing money and it’s the DISCOS.It is like you are running a business and selling goods for N500 less than you bought them. Shey you go make a profit? You can have your revolution though....I want the old political class out. But that does not solve the money issue. Our power system is old, in need of repair, and replacement. And with oil revenues low, and with corruption worsening matters....where are you going to find the money to fix things? Maybe like most socialist countries....another loan, and another loan. |

I guess the FG has to pay SUBSIDY on power costs too before the DISCOs would be happy and before Nigerians would relax. |

Nigerians are a major cause of these discos reaping us off. Firstly there is no supply and we get estimated bills at the beginning of each month which some struggle to pay. N.B. Those with prepaid meters don't complain cos they only pay for what they consume. Secondly, if u fail to pay within a time frame they'll restore power for like three hours and then threaten to disconnect you and you run helter scalter to raise money to pay as if there is electricity. Thirdly, after paying from the following day its goes back to constant black out and maybe one or two hours every two or three days. And the cycle repeats when its time to collect a new months bill, you have supply over night and maybe one or two hours during the day. Fourthly, why is it so difficult for these discos to meter houses but they are always very quick to talk of tarriff review, cos they know that if you only pay for what you consume they'll be forced to up their supply or there will be short fall in revenue generation. My problem with us is why can't we allow them to disconnect and if possible carry their transformers if they like cos we've are just been reaped. As we still run on alternative power supplies after paying. I did it for six months last year, my neighbors were laughing but later the marketers started pleading that my monthly bill will be reduced and they did. Imagine if the whole street, LGA, state or country was able to stand their ground, these discos will beg us to connect with incentives but no, we always want things without stress even to our own peril. God help us. |

with the proposed hike in electricity tariff, Guys we need not to fear. Solar energy is our last resort. i came across my Elder brother's solar system Powered by Smarter Grid international (SGI) in Lagos, it has been his saving grace from darkness and heat. His bulbs, fan's, TV's, phones etc are all powered by it. life would have been hell in Mushin as i think NEPA has forgotten us. Across my street is also a Smarter Grid (SGI) Solar powered kiosk which Tunde uses for as a barbing salon. he now makes more profit without the worry of fuelling his generator. with or without the hike in Tariff SGI has got me covered. SGI solar products too has 2years warranty and is certified by Lightning Global, A World Bank Initiative. you can reach SGI at 24B AJ Marinho Victoria Island, Lagos ans plot 167 Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent Wuse II, Abuja, www.smartergridint.com and +2349051119111

Most people don't like paying for electricity. Since last month, 20 days without light, I have spent 5 times my bill on generator. But poverty won't make people reason well. Minister of Darkness Fasholar |

Good points @asksteve & tactius My grouse is what equipment have these DISCOs actually bought? Which new transmission line? Yes, I know some GENCOs did buy stuffs. After the privatization, the companies involved didn't keep to the terms of investment agreements or bringing in technical partners. They mostly have what they inherited from PHCN. They couldn't invest in meters till date... why do they keep bothering us with lies Yes the big boys bought over priced lemons from FG and they should deal with it |
