Mechanic says it doesn't matter, certified the engine solid...

Test driven the car...feels sharp
Direct Toks from US...the car is really clean
My mechanic kept reassuring me that mileage doesn't matter (he doesnt know the seller at all)

Bought the car 2.1m already...i can still return it though
But the mileage is scary.. .180k

What do you guys think?

Mileage does not count much, maintenance record is more important. Seen vehicle with very low mileage that needs new engine and ones with very high mileage that is stil going strong.

My personal opinion, for that much mileage. That vehicle is overpriced........

I think 1.6 area seems a fairer deal..... By the time you put 20K mileage on it, the car would be worthless (considering the 9ja factor)...

Major parts replacement would also become due much sooner than later......

Hello Sir

A 2008 Toyota Camry would have an average US mileage of 165,000 Miles in 2019, based on established industry standards.

180,000 Miles for the vehicle is a bit above average, however as the other poster noted, the service/maintenance history as well as the rest of the vehicle history is more or just as relevant as the mileage figure.

A clean title vehicle with no damage and fair maintenance history would likely be a good buy, other variables being positive.

Get a comprehensive VIN report, and set your mind at ease about your vehicle Sir.

Would you pay 2.1 for this car? Dealer is at liberty to rollback, the onus falls on the buyer to check vehicle history.....

I hope this vehicle was not rolled back......... From 306000 miles..........

Vehicle should have 110000 miles, going by industry standards..... (10K per year).......

So it has sure surpassed the mileage test, all other things been equal (full service history consisting of parts replaced) etc etc

Not quite Sir, we would disagree.

Industry average is 13,500 - 15,000 Miles.

That still makes it under 150K miles...... Petty you might call me, but petty it is...........

I think 2.1 million is fair enough, considering the condition of the vehicle, the year, clearing cost, dealer's profit etc.
The car of that age coming from the US would have 150K-160K miles(highway) on the average. The US is a very large country, so no surprises here.
The fact that the odometer may have not been tampered with gives one reasonable confidence about the purchase.

However, for peace of mind , a comprehensive Vin check should have been performed.

I know the US is bigger than bombay (I have been a few times)..... But does not preclude the issues at hand..... Year vs mileage vs cost of purchase........

I completely disagree with u on the mileage & price valuation of the car.

Maintenance is more important than the mileage. If the car is properly maintained & at that mileage, it’s a good buy rather than buy a severely damaged car with low mileage. Maintenance is key & I have owned cars that clocked 300,000 miles before I sold them & the owners are still enjoying them.

At 1.6M for 2008/2009 Camry, the dealer must have stolen the car & probably didn’t pay duty. It appears dealers just pick these cars in the USA for free in other to sell at your quoted price.

Let’s be fair, realistic & objective in our analyses so that people are fed with the right information.

How many Nigerians can afford a clean tittle car of less than 100,000 miles? I will advice op to run a vin check & if car had a decent maintenance record, pls by all means, go ahead & pay.

This is why some unscrupulous dealers will alter the mileage & sell to unsuspecting buyers at outrageous prices.

This is also not correct. When a car is well maintained, resale value is retained regardless of mileage. When I sell my personally used cars, they don’t come cheap. I sold my 2004 sienna of over 200,000 miles 1.5 after 5 years of use. They buyer practically begged me at that price. It was much better than most of the Toks being sold in the market.

For ur information, I use OEM parts & never replaced parts twice. So when selling, I factor in the state of the car.

1.6m for what? Do you know the cost of clearing that car from custom plus shipping alone is about 1.1m. So, 500k balance is for purchase, logistics and profit. Haba!!!, why do you guys like misinforming the populace.

That price is a give away price. It's a steal. Enjoy the car.

Mileage in US really don't matter as most high mileage cars are used either for taxi, patrol, fleet car(which we don't hope yours is) or even personal cars in which it's previous owners did alot of road trips. May it be known to you that cars taken more frequently for highway trips have a more healthier system and are well taken care of in most cases than cars within cities and municipalities.

At 2.1m your 08/09 Camry is a give away. Enjoy the car.

What are you talking about? Fleet cars are very well maintained. It's rental cars that are usually trashed.

If it was sold at an auction site, what's the primary and secondary loss on the vehicle?

If its nothing serious there's a very high likelihood the 2AZ engine in that car is already having oil shortage issues...

I saw 195k miles at 1.980 and run, that 180k miles is 289681 km, man, the vehicle is over used, that common to US Vehicles, American used vehicles like hell, i opt in for Canada which is 95k KM (61k miles)@1850. d 2.1 is much engine n most part already weak just get ready for major issue, just replace dont repair and use OEM
Re: Mileage Of 180k??? by 9icetoo(m): 8:21am On May 21, 2019
The mileage is fair.
OP won't really be doing many miles a year.
Max he will probably do is 8000 miles a year.
If he keeps the vehicle for 5-6 years, he'd add another 40000- 48000 miles to it.

As long as he avoids Jack rabbit starts, doesn't connect his fan direct nor delete thermostat, uses the right weight oils and follows manufacturers OCI, he will be okay.

The only components he may be changing in the five years of use if he adheres to manufacturer instructions are things like radiator fans, suspension components, a fuse here or there, bulbs, etc. These are not going to burn a hole in his pocket.

Enjoy your car OP. The price is okay for the mileage (if the dealers haven't adjusted it).

Thanks guys for the inputs

I guessed I was too much in a rush to get a car that I forgot to carry out my due diligence and trusted my mechanic judgement a lil too much

It is a risk I took and prepping for the outcome whether good or bad...
Not even interested in a VIN REPORT right now, scared of the outcome and it may make even make me feel worse if the car turns out bad
Should have done that earlier

Good or bad decision...
will update you in six months time about the state of the car

I'm sure when I get my second car, i will be more careful

I think you should conduct a VIN report

- It's all clear
- Some issues are picked up
- You return vehicle, incorrect description (claim full refund)
- If you keep the vehicle and later realise the history was negative, the guilty would hunt you each time you see the vehicle

Just get it done and know the true state of your vehicle.....

We the demeanors are here to hold your hands..................
