I shook my head. 'No, I've not done so.'

'And when are you going to do so? When will you have time to concentrate on me? Why don't you call her to tell her right away that it's over?'

'I can't because I love her.'

She stood up. 'Wait a minute. You're making this whole thing look like I'm forcing myself on you!'

'I didn't say so!'

'But, that's what you're doing. No wonder you've been so cold to me since I came.'

'I wasn't cold to you,' I explained.

‘Yes, you are! You’re cold and hostile.’

She was fuming now.

She picked up her bag and stood up. 'It is only a foolish man that will prefer a housemaid to the daughter of a serving senator. Go and marry your gutter girl.'

She went to the door, opened it hastily and slammed it behind her.

I was stung. So, daddy even discussed my relationship with Kike with the general public! How could he do that? This saucy Yetunde used her tongue to run Kike down. How could she do that? How gratuitous!

Anyway, it was good that this happened. I was very convinced that even if Kike would not be my wife, Yetunde should never be. That lady was very arrogant. In addition, she had a razor mouth!

I knew dad would not be happy at the turn of events, but I didn't give a damn again. I would not marry this Yetunde, and that was that. There was no way I would endure this her over-bearing posture.

I switched on the television and tried to relax, wondering on the next thing to do. About thirty minutes after Yetunde stormed out of my residence, mum called.

'Why did you have to treat Yetunde so contemptuously?' mum asked. 'Why did you send her out of your flat?'

I was aghast Yetunde would report the matter so fast and she would paint it the way she did.

'I didn't treat her contemptuously and I didn't send her out of the house,' I replied.

'What happened?'

I told her briefly. There was a short pause.

'You shouldn't have mentioned or referred to Kike, and you shouldn't have made her to feel you don't love her.'

'But, I don't love her, mum.'

'You didn't treat her well,' mum insisted. 'You have to call her and apologize over your conduct.'

I wasn't happy with that decision.

'Did you hear me? Call Yetunde and tell her you're sorry.'

Was it not just to call and say sorry? 'Okay, mum. I'll do that.'

She disconnected the line. I didn't like the way things were going but I played along.

I waited for five minutes before I could call her. Her phone rang for a long time before she picked it.

'Hello,' I said.

'Hello.'

'You shouldn't have stormed out of my residence like that. It was un-lady-like.'

'You mean you called to put blame on me?'

'No,' I replied quickly. 'I called to apologize, although you have your own fault.'

There was no response. 'Yetunde, are you still there?
'Yes.'

'I'm sorry.'

'Okay.'

'You're still angry?'

'No.'

'Thanks for your understanding.'

'Okay. You will have to come and pick me if you want me to come back to your residence. I'm in the house.'

My heart raced. She still wanted to come back? I sighed.

I sighed.

'Okay, I'll come and pick you,' I said and cut the line.

I grinned at her behavior. Just then, my phone rang. It was Kike on the line.

'Good afternoon, Uncle Henry,' she greeted.

I was bemused. Where was this 'Uncle Henry’ stuff coming from again?

'Good afternoon, Kike darling. How is school?'

'School is fine.' There was heaviness in her tone.

'Hope no problem?' I quickly asked.

'Daddy just called me, now.'

I became alarmed. 'My dad? What did he say?'

There was a slight pause. 'Come on, what did he say?'

'He said I should leave you alone as you already have a lady you want to marry. Why did you deceive me?'

My heart sank. 'No, Kike, I did not deceive you. Yes, there's a lady, but I don't love her. It's you I love ...'

The signal from the phone indicated that the call had been terminated. I called her number back. No way in getting through as her phone was switched off.

Damn! Damn! How could dad call her about Yetunde? How could dad paint me as already being committed to her?

Oh, Lord. I was depressed. Then I blamed myself for not telling or hinting Kike before now. Gosh, I should have let her know that my parents were trying to force Yetunde on me. I remained on my seat for several minutes, then I tried Kike's number again. Her number was still switched off. So, what happened now?

I remembered I had told Yetunde I would be coming to pick her. I would have to do that as I planned on what next to do. I picked my car key, locked up the flat and went to my car in the parking space. The Oshos lived at Surulere, although the man had houses in different parts of Lagos. Their residence was not far away.

Within fifteen minutes of driving, I parked at the front of their white duplex. I called Yetunde.

'I'm already in front of your house,' I told her.

'Okay, I'm coming.'

While waiting for her, I tried not to be worried about what Kike told me. Somehow, I told myself I would get over all obstacles and get her to become my wife.

I played music on the car stereo to diffuse my mind. Surprisingly, I waited for more than twenty minutes and Yetunde had not come.

I picked up my phone and called her again. ‘I’m still waiting.’

‘Sorry, I’ll soon be joining you.’

I wondered why she was taking time. I still had to wait for another twenty minutes before she came out of the house. This time around, someone, probably a maid, helped her to bring two bags. Two bags!

'Open the booth so that we can put the bags there,' Yetunde said.

I unlocked the booth. The two bags were put there and she waved off the woman. She soon opened the passenger door to join me in the car.

'Sorry, I took time,' she said. 'I had to be well prepared.'
Well prepared for what? My mind asked.

'It's alright,' I said aloud, brought the engine into life and drove on.

'Did you miss me?' she asked, smiling.

I smiled back. 'Yes, I do.'

'Really? But you drove me out of your house.'

I wanted to get angry with her, but I told myself there was no need.

I smiled back. 'Yes, I do.'

'Really? But you drove me out of your house.'

I wanted to get angry with her, but I told myself there was no need. I would have to always maintain coolness and refuse to allow her rattle me.

'I didn’t drive you out. Rather, you left angrily,' I said.

'You made me angry,' she replied.

Again, I maintained coolness as I drove on.
'Sorry about it,' I said.

'Is that all you will say?'

What else did she want? 'Alright,' I said calmly, 'I'm truly sorry for making you angry. Forgive me.'

She relaxed and smiled. 'Okay.'

I got to my house, drove through the gate and parked the car.

'You have to assist me with one of the bags,' she said.

'That's no problem,' I replied. 'But why two bags?'

She took the smaller one. 'The second bag contains some food', she said. 'Besides, I'll be here till Monday.'

My heart beat increased. Now I was going to have her for many days. I sighed in resignation.
