The ex President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo has vindicated the igbos over the 1966 coups that later result into biafra War.

He revealed that people are been saying that the coup was caused by igbos anyday the actual truth is revealed, I am afraid we might face another war, any one can manipulate anything to ensure we don't embark into another war but i will highlight some facts that resulted the war.

Personally, I feel if the late Aguiyi Ironsi had done more to appease the rest of Nigerians (the northerners in particular who had more casualties during the first coup) the civil war would not have happened when it did

Abstract The political turmoil that conflagrated in the middle and late 1960s unavoidably led to civil war in Nigeria that lasted for 30 full months. The Igbos were pitched against other ethnic nationalities in a war of attrition ‘to keep Nigeria one.’ Whereas much of the outcome and consequences of this war are well known and documented, scholars are yet to properly examine certain salient but ignored themes about the period. One such ignored outcome of the war is the de-Igbonization project initiated by Gowon between 1966 and 1975 and the clinical finishing of the same project by Obasanjo between 1976 and 1979 as well as the period between 1999 and 2007. By sundry policies and curious enactments, both leaders wrecked the psychological balance of Igbos to a point of self denial as several Igbos have found solace and satisfaction in denying their ancestry in order to avoid persecution and ensure survival. Through curious state creation activities and boundary adjustment intrigues, large chunk of Igbo communities have been excised from Igboland with their resources to be part of non-Igbo enclaves. Import and export policies including unclear criteria adopted by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) in the privatization and commercialization programme have been used as tools of disempowerment. Religious uprising and revolts have become veritable strategies of de-populating migrant Igbo population in parts of Nigeria. Indeed curious anti-Igbo legislations such as that associated with the ‘Abandoned Property’ imbroglio remain sure indicators of an ugly and evil agenda. And above all, the persisting denial of Igbo ancestry by many of Igbo extraction deliberately put in Rivers and Delta states amongst others remain a source of worry for Igbo unity. What can be done or are all these without remedies? The paper will address the core grievances of the Igbos and concludes that the three R’s as enunciated by Gowon in 1970 need further elaboration.

The coup was successful in the north but failed in the south because ifeajuna turned it in a tribal coup. Ifeajuna controlled a whole brigrade and could have ordered the movement of trips to any part of the country. He failed because they became sentimental and tipped off the igbos who were marked for death. In any case it was 2 igbo men for stopped the coup ironsi and ojukwu. In fact ojukwu was the one who made sure nzeogwu failed. Nzeogwu needed Kano cos of it's treasury and airport before he could invade the south to finish the coup. Ojukwu refused to cooperate with nzeogwu and that's why the coup failed. Nigeria is a failed state and really there's no basis for unity according to gowon.

Very true.
People conveniently forget that yoruba officers were involved in the coup and that northern troops were used to attack Sardauna's residence. They forget that yoruba and Midwest politicians were killed as well. Finally, they forget the legitimate reasons for the coup : rigged elections and rampant corruption - same as we see today.
