What's your site and what architecture is it built upon.

You can migrate to VPS, use cloudfare, compress your files and even move to better host company.

You can use digital ocean starts at $5 a month.

Make use of a cdn like cloudflare which has a free plan.

Make extensive use of caching especially DB queries.

Other little things like source code modification, image compression, etc. Can also help.

Nairaland is fast also because it is a static site apart from being on dedicated server( as stated by someone above)

if you can't afford high cost, make use of caching e.g mem-chache,, ajax queries instead of heavy server reload, picture compression and sometimes replace colors with pictures, provide alrernate static version free of animation and heavy pictures.
