Ghana military is under funded. Just 180 million dollar budgeted for the sector. I think becus the country is peaceful. Goverment actually are not interested in investing so much into the sector. But the constant security challenge now may change the ball game.

Dar es Salaam. The number of Tanzanians who travel abroad to be enabled to conceive is on the increase, which points to a growing infertility in the country. According to information obtained by The Citizen, a sizeable number of Tanzanians make trips to Kenya to seek fertility treatment.

Our sources say in every 10 people who seek the service at the Aga Khan and Nairobi In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) centres in Nairobi, at least four are from Tanzania. The treatment costs at least Sh5.5 million. It is believed that Tanzanians travel to Kenya because of the reputedly better services and “reasonable cost”.

A lecturer at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dr Henry Mwakyoma, said it was true the country is facing an increase in fertilisation problem. He said the fertilisation treatment in a woman is only carried out if it is only the woman who has problems; if her partner’s sperms are too weak to fertilise the ovary, the procedure won’t be of any use.

Dr Mwakyoma conducted a research sometime back and, according to his findings, at least 80 per cent of Tanzanian men suffer from either temporary or permanent incapacity to impregnate a woman.

However, the specialist could not give an exact figure of clients who have already received fertility treatment at the centre. Dr Joshua Noreh, the owner of Nairobi IVF centre, said his clinic receives at least 270 patients from various countries, including Europe.

He said Tanzanians started coming to his clinic in 2006 and that the cost of his service was Sh5.4 million, excluding charges for tests and consulting fee.

“The consulting fee is Sh42,000 and after that a patient pays Sh420,000 for a number of essential tests,” said Dr Noreh. The doctor added that the total cost for a fertility treatment is around Sh10 million.

The Citizen has learnt that Ugandans too flock to Nairobi where, they say, it is cheaper compared to what they would have paid in Kampala. It costs at least Sh9.5 million to get the service in Uganda, as opposed to the Sh5.4 million one pays in Kenya.

“We have more than five IVF centres here in Kenya, this is why Kenya has become the destination for couples seeking children solutions,” says Dr Noreh.

Other countries whose people are known to visit Kenya for fertility services include South Sudan, US and Ethiopia. Dr Noreh says the infertility treatment involves channeling male sperms to woman’s fallopian tubes.

He added that fertilised sperms are kept for two days in a special container so as to support the growth of an embryo before they are transferred to the uterus for insemination.

He said the infertility was now a global problem and that his centre was among few in the world, which help couples to get children.

“Infertility is now at the average of 10 per cent, thus in every 10 couples, one is troubled with failure to conceive,” he revealed.

The specialist says causes of infertility include “too much schooling” and career pursuits of today’s woman who keeps on putting off marriage.

Could be your neighbors that are not a threat hence why no need to invest in military. Ghana eventually will be like the peaceful Scandinavian countries. What is the constant threat Ghana is facing these days? Never heard of an attack in Ghana.
