The Federal Government said on Tuesday that it had begun to establish “Ruga Settlements” for herdsmen in 12 pilot states nationwide, Igbere TV reports.


Alh. Mohammadu Umar, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, made this known in an interview in Abuja on Tuesday on the sidelines of a workshop on Regional Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and associated legislation in West Africa.


He said that the farm settlements when fully established would address the incessant clashes between Fulani cattle rearers and farmers.


Umar explained that the pilot programme had already commenced on a 31,000-hectare in Kotongora, Niger state.


According to him, the required facilities for a basic life and treatment of cattle are being provided to enhance productivity.


He said that the government would replicate the programme in selected states as work “is ongoing in the 12 pilot states”.


According to him, six settlements will be established in each of the pilot states.


Umar, who added that the centres would be expanded and adequately equipped, and assured the beneficiaries that government would do all that was necessary to enlighten the herdsmen on how the use of ranches could make make cattle rearing more profitable.


He said that the government would sensitise the herdsmen to the social and political benefits derivable from such settlements.


The permanent secretary explained that various spots would be established for the pastoralists to be able to milk their cows.


He also said that dispensaries would be established to prevent the misuse of antibiotics.

Nigeria gone to the gallows under Buhari govt.

Are there no more reasonable people to tell president Buhari that cattle is no longer reared in the open, that cattle is now reared by private farmers in enclosed farms?

Thinking of establishing Fulani cattle ranches in the south is like thinking of provoking another civil war in Nigeria.

Same government have cheap agricultural lands you can access at very cheap price.

In this case, Their practices poses a threat to security and same government is trying to enclose them.

What are you talking about? They are private business owners and government should not be giving them land. It will cause big issues in future and it can be easily reversed by successive governments. They can buy their own land and establish legal, traceable companies to manage the business. Government can support them with access to feed and medicine.

Land is not subsidized for farming. At the worst it can be leased!

Please who exactly are the herdsmen and who actually owns the cows?


Nigeria is not the only country where herdsmen are at least, lets limit ourselves to Africa.
If this is what the government proposes, is that what is applicable in other African countries or we just like doing things the Nigerian way Even when it applies to private businesses?

Bros it is actually fulanisation. There's no other name to call it& I will say y. First, d govt decides 2 use d collective wealth of Nigerians to provide land& living facilities in that land 4a certain people just because they come from a certain tribe.

Second, its not that people don't want solutions, but they want justice first. Fulani herdsmen have had a field day killing other Nigerians because they want land. But instead of d govt fulfilling its constitutional responsibility as enshrined in section 14(2b) of d constitution, d govt comes 2d defence of Fulani herdsmen. D govt is now d mouthpiece of Fulani herdsmen.

Third, they haven't been given land they are killing people. When they are given land& now have foothold in other people's land, what do u think will happen?

How do we preach unity when d buhari led govt glaringly favours one tribe over others even with evidence that this tribe contravenes d laws of d land?

Be wise bro. The farm settlement is on how to take over lands in all those areas. You will be having Emirs all over those settlements. The southern part are the major target. That is why Ohaneaze, Afenifere and co are saying if you want land, you have to hire them and pay taxes

If you own cows,you rent or buy a land to rear them.

Just the way farmers rent or buy lands to farm.

Government still sell fertilizers to farmers who rent or buy lands for farming but here they are buying or renting land for herdsmen.

Very anyhow and tribalistic government.

Government provide subsidised lands for farming all the time. They also provide tax breaks, mechanised equipment etc

It doesn't matter whether they are private businesses. It is a long term goal. Private businesses are the largest employer of labour and also consider the amount of money they add to government coffers as tax etc.
