What is the difference between vice and deputy?

A “Vice” rank is a formal organizational executive position. A deputy can be any person, employee, agent, etc who is appointed & deputized to perform a specific role.

In law enforcement Deputy is a formal position in many cases, but in some other cases it is a temporary assignment authorizing an individual to participate in &/or execute a specific role.

In corporations, a deputy is usually a non executive level assistant tasked with a particular function. It could also be a temporary deputization of a lower level executive for a specific role.

A vice president or a vice chairman has clearly defined functions in the office as second in command to the president. He can only act on behalf of the president if invited to do so.

A deputy has no defined functions. He is only needed when the main principal is away.

In the United States for instance, the vice president is the president of the Senate. In Nigeria, the vice president is the chairman of the National Economic Council which is a powerful position. The deputy governors don't have any defined roles.

Are they not synonymous word used interchangeably, whereas duputy is used more than vice?
