President Muhammadu Buhari has formerly accepted the report of the committee to assess impact and readiness for the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, AFCFTA.

Buhari said that for AfCFTA to succeed, Afican nations must develop policies that promote African production, among other benefits.

He formerly accepted the report from the committee at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

According to him, “It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to this occasion to receive the report on the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and Nigeria’s readiness for it.

“It has been over a year now since the African Union Heads of States adopted the Phase I Agreement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) at its 10th Extraordinary Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, on 21st of March 2018.

“Since then, a lot has been said about Nigeria’s decision to conduct a detailed study on how this agreement will impact us as a country.

“Let me state unequivocally that trade is important for us as a nation and to all nations. Economic progress is what makes the world go around.

“Our position is very simple, we support free trade as long as it is fair and conducted on an equitable basis.

“The AfCFTA will have both positive and negative effects on us as a nation and on our region.

“As Africa’s largest economy and most populous country, we cannot afford to rush into such agreements without full and proper consultation with all stakeholders.

“As you mentioned in your report, intra-African trade is only 14% of Africa’s total trade. Our consumption is mostly of goods imported from outside the continent.

1. I don't understand. Should we not be happy if coastal countries will be the beneficiary of afcfta? We should then join already!! With our porous borders, goods kuku find their way into Nigeria before. We should look to reap gains early. Abi is dis man worried about his brothers in Niger?

2. He has a point here though. Most investors in Africa are foreign and take their monies back to their parent countries. This leads to economic growth without development..
That said, I don't understand his focus really. If he wants only African made products, what difference does it make for Nigeria?? North African and southern African countries will be the beneficiaries of that as they have some manufacturing ability. We don't even have power so nothing for us. I then wonder if all these is concern is not about taking panadol for another man's headache.

Maybe u have not been following the thread, during the Jonathan Administration, the Nigeian Govt has Dominance on the AFCFTA Committee, the brain dead president rejected Nigeria participation in AFCFTA immediately after his inauguration, Now he realized his mistakes and want to blame the Late re-entering on the committee report, always making evasive excuses for silly reasons.

Now we have lost alot of opportunities for not participating during the final formulation of AFCFTA guideline

After this four years who will they blame? The last four years they blamed GEJ for everything.

Nigeria might become a dumping ground of not only develop nation substandard product but also our African nation too if we sign it, but we can also take advantage of it by dominating others African nation market, if Nigeria is not lazy and not scare of competition, i will implore PMB to sign it, because we have a lot to gain than to loose if we are not lazy, and i trust our igbo brothers, they won't disappoint Nigeria by taking advantage of the free trade.
