Re: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by Candy9(f): 10:12pm On Feb 04, 2011
smiley I am no one to say what the name means, but my Yoruba Dictionary says this:
Apena: title of one who calls an assembly together.

So looking forward to what my friends here will say,
Re: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by Nobody: 10:16pm On Feb 04, 2011
apena means someone who calls others.

why are you asking, @ kdk.

it's not a name, but a title, unless someone knows otherwise.
Re: Nairaland Official Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba Dictionary by seanet02: 1:01pm On Feb 05, 2011
@tpia Thats just to somebody just YORUBA. Apena means a High chief in a Community or Town. Its also used for high chiefs of Fraternity clubs or secret clubs in YORUBA land.

I need someone to translate some Calabar words for me. The person who said it to me is from Calabar, Irruan tribe. They are:
Mo nwei.
Mo jemo.
I'm not sure if I spelt it well but I need a translator asap!

LOL! Have mercy, people! All I'm trying to do here is learn to say something pleasant to my future mother-in-law. Something I can't mess up, and mistakenly tell her she looks like my cow's butt,

I AM learning, however, should I ever need to call someone a "monkey's head",

Hello, I'm going to be married to a man who's native language is Lagos Yoruba, and would like to learn basic sentences, phrases. I have gleaned a number of them from your site and a few others. My fiance has also been feeding me some. I'm able to recognise them in writing, but the pronunciation is, of course, not available! Could someone, some good hearted soul, phonetically spell out a few of the common ones, so that I can try to say them? Thank you, I appreciate it!

Where are you getting this from? Do you know that those names are Hebrew and names cannot be translated? Good effort though.

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a translation of a short letter to a rev. father in Enugu.

The topic is quite intimate, but as my Igbo is very limited, I hope someone can help me.
If someone feels able to help me, please send me a message on ICQ or a PM (is this possible here?) or just respond here to give me another option.

Imela/ Thanks to everyone.

I want to learn how to speak and write Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa. I am looking at all of the posts. But, I am not sure if I am pronouncing the words right because I cannot hear them.

Kedu everyone,

I am looking for some kind of expressions of love in Igbo. Not just "I love you", but something more subtle.

Explanation: As some of you may remember, I am a German girl. I am in love with an Igbo man for about 1,5 years now and we are going to get married soon. For some months now I am taking some effort to learn Igbo and I would love to "surprise" my husband-to-be by doing my mariage vow in igbo.

So any kind of help is highly appreciated.

Imela,
Geraldine

People say that Igbo can't be spoken without a little English but is it true? No.
Here are a few ways to eliminate English. We can try elimination words like:

But with Kama
And with Yana
Because with Makka.

Example of Igbo with English "But nsiyaa e metuukwa inhohu aka because it will fall"
Example of Igbo without English "Kama nsiyaa e metuukwa inhohu aka maka o'ma ada"

Some of your translations/spellings are wrong!
Shoe - Akpukpo Ukwu
Beautiful girl - Nwata nwanyi mara mma or nwa agbogho mara mma
bekee not bekke!

It doesn't matter, there are many leading languages that cannot be spoken with out the help of another language, example? English. (Check the origin of the underlined words)

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a translation of "Happy birthday my friend" into Igbo.

It does not mean my boyfriend. It is a (male) friend of my husband-to-be who within the last year also became a good friend to me.

Thanks, Geraldine

There's no general way for saying 'Happy birthday' in Igbo and it can sound funny depending on the way the saying is said. This is because 'birthday' is not present in the Igbo language or culture so a sentence would have to be said, the same reason why it varies and why I'm explaining it to you.

One Igbo version for 'birthday' (when talking about someone else) is:

'Ubochi ha muru gi'

Which translates to 'The day they gave birth to you'

Another would be:

'Omumu gi'

Which translates to 'Your birth', which can be confusing, especially to a man grin

The last is:

'Hapi Batde'

But that's not what you want is it.

What I would say is:

'Riwe ubochi ha muru gi, enyim'.

'Enjoy (directly translates to 'eat') the day 'they' gave birth to you, my friend'.
