I was having a discussion on another forum about what's known as the Just-World fallacy. In case you don't know what it is, it's basically when people cling to the idea that the world is fair so that when something bad happens to someone, they can find a way to blame the victim for it.

If a guy cheats on his wife, someone might say "she probably didn't satisfy him so that's why he cheated." In other words, it's her fault. Or maybe you know someone who's terrific, but still single. And so you say "there must be something wrong with him or her, otherwise they wouldn't be single."

Psychologists say this is based on fear. People need to feel like the world is a fair place, that bad things only happen to bad people. It's also a way to feel like you're in control and that if something happens, it's only because you let it.

Do you think this sort of thing is common? Have you ever been guilty of it? I've never done it, but I have been on the receiving end once where someone was quick to blame me for something I'm pretty sure wasn't my fault. I'm a big believer in taking personal responsibility, but sometimes people take it too far and use it as an excuse to blame the victim.

Can you pleeeeease post a positive thread on human relationships?
