Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday called the life sentence given to Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman as “inhumane” — echoing comments made by the convicted drug kingpin himself. “A sentence for life in a hostile jail” would be “hard” and not worth living, the president said. “It’s something very painful,” López Obrador said. He vowed to bring down violence stemming from drug violence by creating a society less obsessed with material wealth. El Chapo Guzman was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday July 17, by a federal judge in Brooklyn after being convicted in February on several drug-trafficking charges. Meet Emma, El Chapo's pretty wife. Thinking about how to move on with life... Emma Coronel Aispuro, former pageant queen and wife of notorious drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, announced last month that she would be launching a clothing brand this summer inspired by her convicted husband. Initially named after the infamous drug lord, the collection is set to house El Chapo-branded garments and accessories. However, while attempting to register the brand name El Chapo Guzmán: JGL, Coronel ran into some trademark-related issues on account of her husband's status as a criminal. According to authorities, naming the brand after El Chapo "violates public order, morality and good manners." While describing the premise of the brand online, Coronel explained that her goal is to "protect" her style as well as her husband's, and of course to "please everybody." The young designer also noted that the idea to launch a clothing brand was one she conjured up with El Chapo himself, claiming that the two sourced inspiration from their daughters.
