I'm not a fan of categorizing a person's past crimes as a mistake. A mistake is an error made without the intention of making it. Mistakes are unintended.. A crime however is deliberate and premeditated. A crime isn't a mistake. It's a conscious decision to partake in an illegal action. Ike's drug dealing might have been a poor decision, but it was definitely not a mistake.

Now that this distinction has been made, I don't agree with your opinion about not judging people based on past mistakes crimes. I'm strongly of the opinion that a person's past provides a mirror into their true personality and can offer predictions of their future actions. This is not to say that people don't grow or change. But you have to understand that there are personality traits and behavioral predispositions that underlie the tendency for people to commit crimes and these traits are usually unalterable and they are useful predictors for possible future crimes.

This is why criminal records are used in vetting people who apply for important positions. This is why the police would spend more time investigating those with criminal records than they would those without criminal records if both are under investigation for a crime.

I'm not saying we should treat people who have committed crimes in the past with disregard. I'm not saying we should dissociate ourselves from them. All I'm saying is that we should be mindful of the fact that there is always a potential for them to commit a similar crime or worse in the future, based on the fact the behavioural traits that predisposed them to committing the previous crime are still alive in them.
