Gambling Addiction, Its Effects And How To Deal With It. by djblue007(op): 12:41pm On Jul 21, 2019
Gambling which is the act of placing money or other assets on a game probable outcome is so destructive when one becomes addicted to it.

Gambling like hard drugs or alcohol is addictive and requires a psychological approach to manage it. The rate at which our youths have become addicted to football betting, lottery, Baba Ijebu(2 sure, 3 direct, permutation, etc), virtual soccer, racing, colour, among others is alarming.

When one becomes addicted, he/she keeps coming back even when they are losing with the hope that they will recover what they have lost. This is called compulsive betting. At this point they cannot just control themselves and make rational decision. The lottery companies or bookmakers or bookies are aware of this psychological plague. A bookie can never lose! Of course everyone wants to venture into the business, and little wonder we have so many of them around!

In soccer betting, when you place a bet, and you win, what bookies do is pay you from someone's stake from the other end. You know the bookies have so many outlets and even employ staff who work for them. Those staff are well paid courtesy of the stakes people place on games outcome.

An addicted gambler having won a game will eventually lose more than he has won. Honestly, each luckily won game is a bait for more loses!

An addicted motorcyclist asked me one day whether lottery is legalised. I broke into an uncontrollable laughter, and explained to him how well regulated the industry is. They even warn that only persons of 18+ age are allowed to participate but we have so many younger people that gamble uncontrollably. For example, I was in a sports bet shop sometimes ago to charge my phones (trust these guys to always provide power supply 24/7). I just noticed this young boy of about 14 years old enter and asked to use my phone to book some games but I declined. After a while I discovered this same boy had gone ahead placing all the money his mum sent to her friend through him on virtual soccer, the money was 5,000 naira. He kept on weeping profusely.

There are so many adults ranging from elites and non-elites that gamble and lose on daily basis. This set of people have been financially and emotionally demoralised, but they still keep coming back to play lottery. Some even manage to stop for a while but end up coming back. They can't just stop because they are compulsively addicted!

One of the enabling avenues is that gambling can be done online or using SMS on mobile and computer devices.
