Theoretically speaking, the 2019 general elections averagely conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which gave the incumbent President Muhammadu BuharI a second term of another four years should not be over celebrated by Nigerians. This is because, looking at it from a laysman’s eyes, Buhari has the back-up of strong-willed, popular and well-respected,politicians who control the medulla oblongata of their supporters even at the expense of the supporters’ wills. One of the pillars that supported the president and his second term ambitions firmly is Asiwau Bola Ahmed Tinubu, national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Prior to the elections, the Jagaban of Borgu did all within his capacity to campaign vigorously for the President’s victory over his main and major opposition candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. </p> As the man in the face of this piece, Asiwaju Tinubu is being rumoured in certain segment of the country to be mulling the idea of gunning for the coveted number one seat of the Akinola Aguda House in Aso Rock, Abuja. Though, Asiwaju has not formally come out to declare to Nigerians his intention to run for the country’s number one plum job, the intensity with which many of his admirers and “haters” alike have been discussing and going about the issue have so far generated heated controversies and debates in the political space of the nation and beyond. Recall that at the emergence of Nigeria’s nascent democracy back then in 1999, Asiwaju Tinubu was the only progressives governor in the entire South West and he faced a lot of discriminations most especially from the Olusegun Obasanjo-led Presidency. At a point, OBJ seized Lagos State revenue for years but Asiwaju devised alternative techniques to weather the storm of OBJ. He (Asiwaju) knew that Lagos State is like a country and could survive even without any support from the central. Asiwaju was able to stand firm on his decision never to dance to the tune of OBJ and his PDP cohorts who wanted to “control his mentality”. Won’t such a man with rare sterling political qualities and courageous leadership traits do better in Aso Rock if given a chance? While many are confidently beating their chests that Asiwaju Tinubu would never think of contesting for the presidency, some Nigerians in their own best opinions believe that the 3rd democratically elected governor of the Centre of Excellence remains the best man for the job, if he decides to throw in his cap in the presidential battle ring come 2023 – this is if the presidency is zoned to the South West. However, judging by the public opinion and feelers being scooped from those in the know and close political watchers and strategists, Asiwaju Tinubu stands tall in overcoming all obstacles and rocks of Gibraltar that may stand his way during the 2023 polls. You may want to ask why? Well, one must not conclude on what perhaps may not be conclusive as yet; people should learn to belief in the policy of “never say never” in democracy or anything they do not have personal or direct control over in life. To be candid, democracy is strictly about the game of electoral numbers and the votes and wishes of the majority and not the minority. That’s why it is often said that, in democracy, the minority will have their say, but the majority will always have their ways, except if it’s not under a free and fair electoral contest. If this statement above could be put into consideration, then Tinubu may emerge as Nigerian’s 14th President/Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces….or he may not. If it is the wish of the Nigerian masses, most especially majority of eligible voters of the country that Bola Ahmed Tinubu is their desired candidate for the presidency, so shall it be. Read More

Op, am sorry to disappoint you, if you check the history of Yoruba and the northerners it always end up in betrayed political sentiment in favour of the north, take for example Awolowo and the north, Abiola and Babangida etc. The relationship between Tinubu and the north will also end up the same. When it happen you will be sorry for him. |

OP, Very good analysis and balanced input. Your topic is provocative! First, let me say Tinubu is a survivor. He is like Obasanjo. Both have encountered monumental obstacles in their political career that many others had died or withered trying to overcome. The two are very strategic in their approach to issues but also have blindsights. It is Obasanjo's blindsights, nore than any external threats, that stand in the way of his acknowledgement and acceptance as a national hero...great as the man is as a tactical strategist! Whether he runs for the office himself or sponsors a candidate for the position the truth is, new events on the landscape, and at a higher political exchange, are reshaping the dynamics of APC. The issue of insecurity is the primary challenge to APC. Regions that stood behind APC loyally are forced suddenly to regret their loyalty. Political leaders in NW are frustrated with APC, particularly the Emirs in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina.....and then Kano, are all in regrets, though for different reasons but it is all directed at APC. NW have seven states and it's only two that are terror-free (Kano and Jigawa), the remaining five - Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna, are occupied by bandits and terrorists. Zamfara and Sokoto is particularly worse. They are afraid they might end up like NE. To secure these states will require bringing in military hardware. We all know what that would do....it will attract arms race and mercenaries will flock in. To dissipate militancy and pressure in their own zone the leaders in NW did not stop nor manage and control its spread and were unperturbed that bandits in NW were shipping South to Yorubaland. Pass the problem elsewhere so we can be spared! In NC, their leaders are also regreting their loyalty to APC and even questioning their dependency and attachment to political North. Beside Niger State, all the states in NC, six of them are victims of fulani herdsmen and bandits. Not only do they question their loyalty to APC they regret also of their participation in civil war and errors of their leaders in 60s and betrayal of Joseph Tarka. This is monumental! In SW....the votes for APC in 2019 were the margin of victory that put Buhari over Atiku. In 2023 we should expect Yoruba will dictate not only the outcome of APC primary but also that PDP will solicit SW and present a Yoruba candidate to knock out APC. This is a forecast only! There is no reason it should not come true and Tinubu or his surrogate become next President...except that, as I mentioned before, Tinubu suffers from blindsight, and though he is a survivor.....what lays ahead are not the kind of challenges he can survive. Yoruba is under attack and Tinubu is preaching nationalism. Whaatt!!!!!!!! Lol. Ooni and Alaafin, Obasanjo and Soyinka. These four represent respectively the Priest-King, the Emperor, the General and the Scholar of Yoruba Commonwealth. When they stand on same side and say Nigeria must be restructured....for the moment you abandon your ideology and cross to where they are and stand with them....you dont tell them rebelliously to their face that Nigeria must be held together by all means. Tinubu cannot hold Nigeria together by himself, not by APC alone. The Northerners he is hoping to ally with are not happy with APC....and then the only people he can count on to cross bridges and pave the way for him in 2023, he raised his voice in opposition to them. How is he going to win 2023 without Yoruba....even if all the current APC states back him or his candidate? He must first ally with the Commonwealth so we can have confidence in him and put trust in him to correct the wrongs of past and bring the nation to equity and justice for all its sub nations and ethnic groups without exception. We dont want another Obasanjo, Tinubu is behaving like one! |

The reason why Nigeria is like this. Imagine the president hasn't even completed a year out of his four years we are already shifting to 2023. No one is talking about accountability from the present government, rather they are doing a hollow analysis here and there. I weep for some people. |
