kYjelly2:Oga, stop this your ideology abeg. Where are the charging ports in Naija to charge such cars, even if we assume that electricity is readily available? What about the expertise of our local mechanics and rewires to maintain them? And when the batteries reach end of life, how do we dispose of them safely, securely and effectively? The 600 watts you mentioned, how far can an electric car run on that one single charge? Or you think people will buy a generator and fuel it, only to allow a stranger to come and charge his car for a couple of hours, for free? If anyone decides to levy a commercial fee for charging an electric car, do you know how much it would cost? In fact, with the cost of fuel and gensets, the cost to charge an electric car commercially is likely to be higher than the cost of fuelling the car with petrol, in Nigeria. Do the math. |

Been Bruce has a problem.......he is trying to be relevant. I beg who knows/has the details of the agreement between Naija and Siemens that was recently signed regarding power production I believe the Germans might be able to resolve our Power issue..somewhat disgraceful that we cant do this on our own but at this stage i believe anything that will help will be acceptable to Nigerians. Kenya just launched Africa's largest Windfarm and we in Naija are fighting over cows. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/07/20/africa/africas-largest-wind-farm-intl/index.html |

laudate: The charging stations will spring up when the need arises, developed by smart entrepreneurs who jump in to fill that need. Obviously stations may not spring up for the few electric cars owned by early adopters, but that's what early adopters do, they pave the way for the masses. Same deal with the expertise, although with EVs, you hardly need mechanics, since there is no oil to change, no spark plugs to change, no engine misfires and cylinder compression to diagnose, no head gaskets to change, no catalytic converters, no oxygen sensors, exhaust manifolds and so on. Instead you have reliable DC and induction motors that spin almost forever and super simple 1 or 2 speed transmissions. As for efficiency, something like the Hyundai Ioniq gets about 4.5miles/kwh or 7.2km/kwh. So it takes about 142 watt-hours to add 1km worth of range to the vehicle which is extremely efficient. I believe a lot of households in Nigeria own gensets that are rated for 5kw and above. So adding a 1kw load would be akin to adding an iron to the gen or a small ac, which many already do, while still powering their tvs, lights, fans, computers and other electronic devices. For the early adopters, using a solar array would be even more viable as these early adopters are likely to be in the middle-class of society or the rich-class of society. As for disposals of batteries and end of life, that shouldn't be a big deal as there is already an extensive network in Nigeria for disposing lead acid batteries, just ask anyone who has ever sold dead inverter batteries, or car batteries. The network for disposal of lithium chemistries would also be similar to that of lead acids. Besides, these batteries are rated for 10+ years and replacing them with a new of fairly used pack is not that difficult for trained engineers to accomplish. Below is a graphic highlighting yearly fuel costs of Electric Vehicles, Hybrids and Petrol Vehicles. 1 Like |

kYjelly2: Oga, this your long epistle shows you are totally dissociated from the reality on ground in Nigeria. Who told you that batteries are disposed of safely in Nigeria? They are not. They are a major source of pollution in our environment. Hybrid cars that use both fuel and batteries have been imported into Nigeria in the last 10 years, but guess what? The expertise to maintain and repair them is still almost non-existent. Most owners of hybrid cars have tales of woe to tell, when it comes to maintenance. And after a few years, they just abandon it when the wahala becomes too much! As for saying that 5kw generators are easy to get, you keep forgetting there would be an increase in the quantity of of fossil fuel needed to power such generators, if they are to be used to charge electric cars. Like I said earlier do the math. Someone already made it clear, that despite the huge number of charging ports in China, thousands of their cars still run on fossil fuels. As for the charging ports that will be needed to charge those cars, will you release the money to import and install them here? Electric cars are not a priority for now. We should be thinking of fixing our infrastructure, healthcare, educational system and job provision status. Electric cars are an unnecessary luxury.... |

laudate: lol, no one said it was a priority bruv! Bruce only buying EVs for his company in no way impedes the government from tacking all you mentioned above. I believe these two issues are mutually exclusive. Seriously though, don't be so pessimistic in regards to EVs, they are part of a future that is INEVITABLE! |

kYjelly2: Ben Murray Bruce is just playing to the gallery with his statement. The same man who pays irregular salaries to his staff? The official vehicles in his company's fleet are less than 5 and are badly maintained. And they are all Tokunbo. If Femi Otedola had said this, I would have taken it seriously because he has the clout and ability to deliver, when it comes to such things. Buying EVs is an unnecessary distraction and a waste of scarce foreign exchange, that could be diverted to more important causes. And if hybrid cars and natural gas/LPG fuelled cars are yet to gain traction in Nigeria, despite all the hype built round them, and the awareness that has been going on for over 10 years in Nigeria, is it EV cars that now wants to gain ground? Abeg, let people focus on more important issues like healthcare, education, security challenges, infrastructure etc. |
