Anambra Traders Ban Prayers In Markets by Nobody: 8:23am On Aug 01, 2019
The Anambra State Amalgamated Traders Association on Wednesday banned prayers in markets across the state.

ASMATA President-general, Ikechukwu Ekwegbalu stated this in Onitsha while addressing market union leaders.

He said the ban had become necessary because politicians had hijacked the exercise.

He said “What we see now is extortion and conversion of prayer sessions to political rallies.

“This move became necessary because we have discovered that some overzealous ones abuse this practice by extorting market men and women regularly of their hard-earned resources.

“Some have turned the prayers into political jamborees and this is not healthy for the system.

“All market leaders are expected to meet with the traders and inform them of this development.”

Ekwegbalu frowned at the situation where police or government officials would be involved in matters concerning traders, whereas such issues could best be resolved by the market leadership.

He urged traders to seek redress through the appropriate processes when there were disagreements.

The ASMATA boss condemned revenue racketeering, urging leaders of market unions to remit revenue generated from their respective markets to the state government coffers.

He added “We call on traders vying for elective positions to follow due processes in their campaigns in accordance with the constitution of the market and not engage in any activity capable of threatening the credibility of the election.

“We are looking forward to a peaceful, credible and a transparent election this time around.”

Very good.

If I were the most senior staff in my unit, I would have banned the nonsense they do here. grin

For now, all I do is ignore them. I have told them it isn't part of my job-description, neither does it contribute to the bottom-line.

Anambra is a state that has high market potential. Higher than what they're presently enjoying.

Unfortunately, the types of news coming from there discourage people from traveling there.

The crime rate in Onitsha market is unbelievable. Lagos has dealt with its market rats and is now enjoying security and greater business. Anambra too should.

I enjoyed my business trip to the east, my hosts were nice folks.

To me this is good move. Let them pray at home and stop wasting man hour. If u are unfortunate to be in most market during d prayer days, u will waste d whole day before shops will open.

No bank or corporate entity will use the whole morning to pray while keeping customers waiting till 12noon.

Ban it biko. Any day Nkwo Nnewi is having prayers, Nnewi is wasted that day. Pray in your house or church. Market it for business and should remain same

Good. I hate it when I enter alaba international market and I see loud speakers with pastor preaching and collecting offerings. Once their business fails they switch to the Bible wielding enterprise. undecided
