While I agree that Danjuma didnt pull the trigger I don't agree that Danjuma was shoved aside. Igbo officers in Abeokuta were already being shot by Domkat Bali and co and it is something they planned seriously for months. I believe Walbe, Bello and others took Ironsi and Fajuyi to kill them with the full knowledge and complicity of Danjuma. Unless there are facts to the contrary

shittu alao(a yoruba man from kwara who hated igbos too also took part in that coup as a "northerner"wink bcuz everytin was regional at that time
it was a northern counter coup so there is no way danjuma won't have known about it
danjuma was asked by gowon to stop killing and he did so until the soldiers around him grew restive and took over
that's not to say that danjuma liked ironsi,as a matter of fact he despised him

Captain Nwankwo, Ironsi's ADC has already told the story of Ironsi's death many times.

TY Danjuma was who killed Ironsi and Fajuyi. Had Nigeria been a civilized place, Danjuma would have gone to jail for murder

Don't you also think that if Nigeria were a sane society and Danjuma et al did not kill Ironsi, he (Ironsi) would have eventually gone to jail for treasonable felony of subverting a we-the-people constitution which he swore to defend and obey under any circumstances the day he took the oath of office as GOC?

If Danjuma had not killed Ironsi and Nigeria was a sane society, Ironsi should have gone to jail for assuming power, regardless of whatever he did with the constitution. A military officer has no business taking over power. But I hasten to add that the same jail would have been the portion of all Military officers who assumed power such as Gowon, Murtala Mohammed, Babangida and of course, president Buhari.

All these other military men you hastened to add above wouldn't have ever taken power if Ironsi had not set the bad example.

As long as Ironsi was their overall superintendent and boss, they were all kids under him hence were right to follow his example. So they should have allowed Ironsi's bad example remain in place just because they are not 5 year old kids? Was the Ironsi who set the example himself a 5 year old kid?

For your information, Ironsi never conducted any coup in his military career. Ironsi was taken unawares about the coup just like everyone else, that's why he rallied loyal troops and put down the coup.Nobody puts down a coup he is involved in. Ironsi may have taken over as a result of the coup but never conducted any coup himself. Military coups were fashionable at the time, most countries in West Africa went through Military coups.

What is however remarkable is that all those who came after Ironsi did much worse than he did.

You have kept on repeating this stale line of "Ironsi never conducted any coup..."
Who even told you this? A coup is any take over of power in such a manner which cricumvents the laid down constiutional provisions for that. Ironsi planned and executed a coup within a coup.
What the constiution he swore to protect and preserve in all circumstances dictated for him to do at that moment was to simply swear in Alhaji Dipcharima as Balewa's replacement, also replace the slain premiers with their deputies, proceed to punish the coup plotters according to the military courtmatial laws of which he was the chief custodian, and returned to the barracks as a professional soldier who should show no interest in politics while still in office. But his greed for power and personal aggrandizement got the better part of him as he told the parliarmentarians to give him power and threatened them into unwilling submission by claiming that he would not be held responsible for whatever befell the country if political power was not surrendered to him. That itself was a coup.
For a supposed chief security officer of the entire country to in advance deny responsibility for any security breach should he be denied power means he was up to a very dishonest game.
And each time you claim Ironsi foiled the coup, you sound rather shallow and illogical for the following reason:
Ifeajuna's coup was aimed at introducing military rule and subverting the independence constiution. Now Ironsi's action ended up producing exactly the same result. So how did that amount to foiling of the coup? An actual foiling of the coup should have resulted in preserving the democracy in place and returning power to the civilians without any alteration in the extant constiution.
It is like Thief A robs you of your money and as he was on his way escaping with it, Thief B stops him and robs him too of the money and then ran away. Then you begin to commend Theif B for foiling Theif A's attempt to rob you despite he didn't return the money to you after robbing Thief A of it. Does that make sense?

The members of parliament at that time expressed a view that was similar to your own.

Kindly read the excerpt below:

In his own words, Chief Richard Akinjide said the Ministers did not hand over to Ironsi. In 2000, he said ” under the law, that is, the interpretation Act, as acting President, Nwazor Orizu had all the powers of the President. The GOC said he wanted to see all the cabinet ministers. And so we assembled at the cabinet office. Well, I have read in many books saying that we handed over to the military.

We did not hand-over. Ironsi told us that” you either hand over as gentlemen or you hand-over by force”. Those were his words. Is that voluntary hand-over? So we did not hand over.

We wanted an Acting Prime Minister to be in place but Ironsi forced us, and I use the word advisedly, to hand over to him. He was controlling the soldiers.

The acting President, Nwafor Orizu, who did not cooperate with us, cooperated with the GOC. Dr. Orizu and the GOC prepared speeches which Nwafor Orizu broadcast handing over the government of the country to the army. I here state again categorically as a member of that cabinet, that we did not hand-over voluntarily. It was a coup”. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2016/01/hand-over-or-took-over-power-2/amp/

That Richard Akinjide's account was exactly what I was referring to, just that I couldn't locate it online anymore. Thanks for sharing. Ironsi foiled Nzeogwu's coup and replaced it with his own coup.
