Virtually every theist I've come across, both online and offline seem to unconsciously exhibit this fear whenever I engage them.

One said to me recently.

"It is better I live, believing that God exists and discover in the end he doesn't. Than not to believe and realize he does in the end"

When you analyze the above, I'm sure you can't help but smell fear oozing out from that fellow.

They are afraid of hell.

They are afraid of the wrath of God. After all, he is a consuming fear, they say.

They are afraid that by not believing, something evil will befall them. Perhaps their finance will crumble. Perhaps that beautiful future they always envision will fall out of place.

They are afraid to die. Die before their time as they put it...

They are simply afraid!

Every religion, ever created used this mechanism called FEAR. It is what keeps this system standing. Remove it and the whole system cease to exist.

It takes only enlightenment to break free from this powerful tool. Yes, I said POWERFUL! cause I've been there.

Dear fellow atheists, don't be too harsh on them. It isn't easy to break free from years of indoctrination, brainwash and delusion. It isn't easy.

From your analysis, it's obvious you are referring to the Christian religion, so I'll answer as one.

For the records, I'm a Christian and born again (by the grace of God).

From what you wrote up there, honestly, I can categorically tell you that any Christian who lives in fear is not a true Christian after all.. Atheists often use this line of hell to buttress their points.. I am not a Christian today because I'm afraid of going to hell, hell No!! There's no love in fear sir. Listen to what the Bible says about fear in 1John.4.18 - There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. As a Christian, the only fear I have is a reverential fear for God and not a tormenting fear..

In a world like this, it is no doubt that you will reap what you sow.. If you do good, you'll reap good in return and if you sow bad, you will reap same in return.. This is true for everyone even if you take religious beliefs from this. As a true Christian, you are expected to live a godly life and eschew all appearances of evil.

So many today want to serve God and still indulge in some sins, which isn't God's plan for us.. So many are not ready to give their lives entirely to Christ.. The Bible is against sin of any form but then, many cannot resist the temptation to indulge in sin.. So instead of following God's ways and living a righteous life, they rather opt for the "God does not exist" thing so they can willfully indulge in whatever comes their minds..

It is only those that have cockroaches in their cupboards, those that still want to indulge in their secret sins, that are afraid of Hell. Those who claim to be atheists can attest to this..

The root of religion is the fear of the uncertain.Isn't that what drives fear in all areas of life?

Slaving away 9-5 for crumbs is driven by the fear of the uncertain...It takes a personal choice to be free from fear of the uncertain and even still you can't really be free from fear.People cling unto anything that provides a degree of certainty.For atheists it's science and for theists it's God and religion. You still don't get it.. I would advice you read the Bible again but this time, don't suspend your intelligence. You folks are fond of seeing even the evils in the Bible as right. So Yahweh puts the gun of hell to your heads and says "If you don't love me I will pull this trigger and you suffer for eternity" and you says this is love? Or free will? How is it free if the opportunity cost is damnation?

I think in our distant past when our cognitive abilities started developing, it made sense to assume that like a mother and father makes provision for our well being and like they would scold us for straying (which could have dire consequences), a god or gods have provided this world for us and would scold us if we strayed. The casual remorseless brutality of nature must have accentuated those fears and that's why they sort to appease the gods. We who now stand on their shoulders are begin to realise that there are no universe spanning parents and that we must work towards our own survival.

For those who want to live in the comfort of believing in universe spanning parents, it is their prerogative but they shouldn't expect the rest of us to indulge them when they say the naked emperor has the most beautiful clothes on.

@boldened: It is only those who have skeletons in their cupboards that will see that as a threat and begin to develop fear.. If you live right here on earth, why should you fear the eternal damnation that comes to evil doers??

Those are the words of Jesus and it stands.. If you are scared of hell, then stop purposely living a sinful life and ask Him for mercy.

Some want to be wicked to others but don't want same wickedness done to them. Some are ready to kill, steal and covet people's properties but don't want to pay for their crimes.. Haba, it doesn't work that way!! If there's no punishment for sin, imagine what the human race would have turned into??

@boldened: It is only those who have skeletons in their cupboards that will see that as a threat and begin to develop fear.. If you live right here on earth, why should you fear the eternal damnation that comes to evil doers??

Those are the words of Jesus and it stands.. If you are scared of hell, then stop purposely living a sinful life and ask Him for mercy.

Some want to be wicked to others but don't want same wickedness done to them. Some are ready to kill, steal and covet people's properties but don't want to pay for their crimes.. Haba, it doesn't work that way!! If there's no punishment for sin, imagine what the human race would have turned into??

Don't you think if we begin to live a righteous and godly life here on earth, things will definitely work out for our good?

There is no real thing called sin neither is there universal justice. All the bad guys who died and got away with whatever they did will not be punished because they are dead. If you and I do nothing to address the bad things people do while are alive then the misery will be ours to bear.
