I must say I am very grateful for the contributions of each and everyone of you on this thread....
Story short, I ventured into poultry farming for the first time in my life about 4 weeks ago... And with the help of EMMACHILE (God bless this man), I was able to start a 200 zartech birds, this Thursday would make it 4 weeks, mortality so far is 1 which happened on the third day of arrival.
Below is the picture of the birds at their 3weeks+3days

Hello House, Bought 1 litre of molasses. Pls can the house prescribe the right dosage in (ML) to add to Chicken (Layers 8wks old) drinking water.
Re: ... by Turks: 8:18pm On Aug 01, 2019
- Always start out your day old broilers with calcium supplements. Examples are UltraCal D, Asbona, Calcimax etc. This helps them develop strong bones and helps ward off splayed feet as a a result of weak legs to carry the bird’s weight especially in broilers.

- The best feed for your day old broilers is CRUMBLES. Speaking from experience. Each grain constitutes all the necessary nutrients unlike the mash where some are separated by the birds whilst feeding. Examples are Ultima, Breedwell, Hybrid, New Hope, Happy Chicken/Happy Turkey feed etc

- There are lighting regimens for different birds. Endeavor to follow these lighting regimen in order to get the best weight out of your birds. For instance; Day old birds are to be given light for up to 23hrs. They require just 1 hr darkness for the first few days & before it increases to about 9hrs of darkness.

- Make sure you use Fliptop feeders for the first 2-3weeks for the sake of feed economy as well as good litter management. Most farmers make use of red tray feeders which to be honest isn’t really economical in terms of feed utilization for the birds as a lot of wastage sets in as a result of them climbing into the tray feeders and scattering the feed, defecating & eating from the feed at the same time. A Coccidiosis outbreak can occur as a result of this.

- Ensure you provide adequate drinkers & feeders for your birds. Water is life as the saying goes. Broilers especially can actually die as a result of inadequate water for digestion proper digestion to take place.

150 chicks will need about 150,000 to raise and buy day old including drugs and feeds.

Equipment you require are follows
4 water drinkers (10 litres)
12 feeder trough (large)
10 flop top plastic to replace round trays
3 or 4 electric bulbs
Coal pot or lantern

Optional accessories include weight scale and thermometer.

to get a very good weight and escape the exorbitant prices experienced during stock up of day old chicks for Christmas, what time would you recommend for someone to start stocking Christmas chicks?

Whats good weight? Above 2kg, 3kg, 4kg?
Target maximum of 10 weeks with ad-libitum feed or else you may not make any profit. With Olam broilers in the mix now, i dont forsee too much price hike this year.

thanks for the response. targeting a weight of say 4kg.
concerning the hike in price, well even for this coming Sallah where the use of chicken is considerably low, there was still a hike in price.we bought DOC for as high as 300naira. I still think there may be a substantial rise in the price this year sir. Shalom

I don't see doc going above 250 naira max. Olam is always below 200 naira and seem to be dictating the prices for now.

Lol
You can compare by checking their prices they quote twice a week but there are many sources cheaper than this and it could even be in your neighborhood.

Olam never dictates the prices bro. Agrited and Zartech do. They’re the pacesetters.

Olam is larger than both. If you notice the prices since Olam came into the mix, the Era of sub N300 plus seems to be over.
Olam prices are always below N200 and that seems to make others adjust their prices from reaching the roof.

Is it true that olam also produce eggs and mature broilers which they sell very cheap

I know of eggs and some is done through the support of hitherto moribund farms around the north. They supply the farms with the layers, drugs and feed and also attach vet doctors to monitor the process on these farms.

Olam is controlling almost all poultry options in the north. It's that large.

I agree with you sir. Here in Kaduna where Olam is largely based, products from other companies seem like they're smuggled in. It is less in the southern side of the state because there is a shared boundary with Nasarawa, Plateau, and Niger which means one gets products from other companies quickly and cheap before Olam deliveries arrive.

Isn’t this why big birds dominate the market?
You couldnt possibly compete if you came to the market with 5weeks old birds.

Maybe because the north. Have you been to Zartech? I doubt it. Visit before you draw a conclusion. Bear in mind Zartech is strictly livestock.

Then why are all the other hatcheries complaining of Olam?
I deal with facts here as seen in the link. Olam is Africa's biggest hatchery and feedmill.
https://allafrica.com/stories/201709120029.html

Agrited just announced building a new large hatchery by agrotop am sure to counter this or compete with Olam. It's all good for the consumer market. Prices of meat and eggs will surely be affordable to anyone in the long run.
