I was one of the experts invited to speak at a 2-day Waste Symposium organised by Cranfield University and West Africa Energy in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The symposium held on 25th and 26th July, 2019, and was themed ‘Achieving sustainable waste management and energy from waste in developing countries.'

I made a presentation on 'The Integration of the Informal Waste Sector into Nigeria's SWM System: Barriers & Success Factors', the informal waste sector with workers such as the scavengers/wastepickers, is considered as the most directly vulnerable group in solid waste management and from my perspective, the economic and health state of Nigeria’s informal waste workers is a severe issue that needs urgent attention.

You are the real feminist....you've redefined the narrative for Edo females and shown us that a woman's true beauty is not in her facial features but in the strength of her brain.

I hope other ladies here can realize that being a feminist is standing up to societal ills and global challenges like Environmental sustainability and social injustice in a world that thinks it is the job of a man.

It's sad that we are yet to start taking advantage of the opportunities in sustainable waste management as a nation.

Even at that, we have the scavengers who are interested in almost all recyclable trash. Metal, plastic, cartons, wood etc.

This is the type of thread that ought to make FP. But here it is still lying fallow. If it were to be 'Alexrep. Gives two Oloshos award for peace', it will be on FP in no time.


That being said, AdesuwaObasuyi, I commend your contribution in this regard. Especially when it's not all about keeping our environment clean, but a topic that stands for the welfare of people who has taken it as a job to ensure we live in a clean environment.

A week ago, I saw a woman sitting comfortably on a hip of waste that was loaded into a truck. She sat so comfortable that i wondered if she would later sit at a table to eat.

She had no apron, no boots, to nose guard......

And at the end, a take home of at most 20k in a month.... I'm sure it would be less though...

You raised a very important point, I actually spoke with the men and women who work on the dumpsites on the importance of always wearing PPE, I wrote about their responses in my article.

This is commendable. But there's a vital part of this whole recycling thing that environmentalists are talking about. The welfare of these scavengers.

They are exposed to all infections and to make it worst, don't wear adequate protective gears and all.

2. Our waste management structure is very poor especially in the most states and LGA apart from the FCT whose best is not enough.

This is something that environmentalists needs to push down the throats of these nonchalant governors.
