Reality Television Shows have become the rave of the moment in the entertainment industry, and ever since the maiden edition of Big Brother Africa (BBA) in 2001, in which a Nigerian was featured in a reality show for the first time, which in other words paved the way for others, Reality Television programmes have become the ‘Next Big Thing’.

In Nigeria, I have seen reality television shows continuing to snowball like; Star Quest, Gulder Ultimate Search, Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, Three Crowns Family Game Show, Maltina Street Dance Africa, Peak Talent Hunt, West African Idol, Koko Mansion and Big Brother Naija (BBN) among others have filled the Television Airwaves.

It’s no longer news, the controversies surrounding these reality TV Shows in Nigeria, seeing as some of them comes with global franchise and adaptations and one of such shows is the widely acclaimed Big Brother Television Series. It is considered to be one of the biggest reality TV shows to have been introduced to the world, with different countries staging their own versions and Nigeria is not excluded in this rave. Now while this show brought about a new dawn of TV shows in Nigeria, there have been controversies and the call for an outright ban of the show, yet people still desire the series, cause of its raw and undiluted entertainment that resonates with today’s generation.

Now just as we have seen with the reality TV ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’ Reality TV shows have the power of elevating people from grass to Grace and in Nigeria, Reality TV shows have produced yet some of our biggest celebrities, to mention but a few; Omawumi Megbele became famous when she came second in the first edition of West Africal Idol. O.C Ukeje is unarguably the biggest actor to jhave emerged from a reality TV show, Ukeje won Amstel Malta box office, a platform which elevated his acting career. Iyanya the “kukere” crooner won the 2008 MTN Fame reality TV show. Johnny Drille is also not excluded from this list as he also was a contestant in the 6th season of MTN project fame in 2013.

Now I have heard some viewers also claim they are yet to see a Mentoring TV show, an education TV show or even a Dubbing / vocal skills competition TV show. But all that is about to change as Africa leading brief video has announced its partnership with Digital cable TV StarTimes to launch its first ever Voice To Fame TV Show in Nigeria, which will feature the re-enactment of classic movies and TV plays, rap battles, Lip-synching with accordance to classic dialogues taken from Movie clips and TV shows, with the focus being on mouth and expressive facial expressions. The 13-episode TV show will feature feature (4) contestants each, with contestants with least votes from the audience being evicted after each episodes.

With that being said, I believe reality TV shows have come to stay and will be here for a very long time, we have seen it create new generation of celebrities and we will see more celebrities emerge from the shows.
