Not necessarily true. You live with the consequences of a well taken penalty. There are several components of a well taken penalty which increases your luck contrast to a lackluster attempt. Some of these components include, power of kick, speed of the ball, angle, technique on the ball and some unseen variables like confidence. A well taken penalty increases the probability of scoring.

You can get your technique perfect and you slip. Or the wind moves the ball sideways by an inch. Or somehow the keeper guesses correct. Especially seeing as the pressure is quite intense during a shootout, and one is more prone to mistakes.

While I do agree that one can get better at taking spot kicks, the element of luck cannot be discounted. Even Hazard and Ronaldo have missed PKs

You make my point by mentioning pressure and that is why I said courage/ confidence is an unseen variable that increases that probability.

Tomori and Mount are already feeling like part of the group. Within 2 matches, they have slugged out with European Champions and gave a good account of themselves. Not like times past where Tomas Kalas and co will play once a season and be feeling like outsiders and uncomfortable around the first team.

But we have All seen relatively poor penalties go in, while well-struck ones are somehow saved or ricochet off the post and away. Which is my point. You can be as good as anyone at taking PKs and still miss even two or three in a row, despite taking them well.


That's why one can only encourage and teach the technique, and not apportion blame. Anything can happen in a shootout.
