This government has been in power for over four years now and can't correct the "mistakes" that Jonathan's government caused, so what were they elected to do than?
It is a real big shame that you people are still talking about "mistakes" of a past regime at this point in time of this current regime.
How much of your on personal life have you been able o correct in the last 4 years?

This current system cannot hold for another 5 years. The GENCOS will one day come to a grinding halt. The 11 discos owed a combined 348 billion to the GENCOs as at 2018, the figure would have doubled by 2020. Remittance to the market operator by the 11 discos stood at 31%. In essence, of the total cost of the energy generated only 31% is paid for by the discos. Since the generated energy cannot be stored the GENCOs are agitating to sell the power to reliable buyers and neighbouring counties.

Some private estates in Lagos charge a tariff over 70 naira per kWh of energy. The discos are asking for a cost reflective tariff which the government, thru NERC is unwilling to do. It is not done anywhere that the government fixes the price for energy. Saying that Nigerians would be unable to pay above a certain tariff, citing minimum wage and all is not being objective. However, if the customer is metered, he can decide on how much power he can consume and is able to pay for.

I'm against a buy back. Let the customers be metered first. Then full deregulation should follow.

1.God bless you

2.I'm sad I have only one like to give this comment.

3.The bolded....is why the DISCOS and GENCOS are insolvent. And both the previous and present admin know it. But allowing the DISCOS and GENCOS set their own price means higher bills, and that's not poltically popular.

4.The government should deregulate power, and stop this attempt to reposses the DISCOS...because we would be back to square one.

This is true, but the real issue is that the estimated billing is the root cause of the unpopularity. If prepaid meters were given out and made universal, the outrage will reduce and tarrif increases will be more palatable.

Why do you people only consider the cost the customers will pay without considering the economic opportunity cost we suffer without stable electricity?
Do you know that Nigeria losses billions of dollars in investments yearly due to no stable electricity?
A country of 200million people is a market of its own. It can attract investments if the right infrastructure is put in place. Stable power is that number one infrastructure followed by a good transport system. You need to research to open your eyes on how much our economy is suffering from because of our lack of stable power.
Countries only regulate tariffs below cost if they have the financial capacity to fully develop and support it. Nigeria govt cannot solely fund the power industry to full development which was why they privatised it. But keeping tariffs below cost has made their privatisation efforts to be in futility because the low tariffs and the losses is the major issue keeping investors away from the sector.

Stable power can create more jobs that will lift those from Kwara, logo, Niger, Nasarrawa etc out of poverty that wouldn't be possible if tariff isn't increased.
Oga, increasing electricity tariffs in Nigeria will never guarantee stable power supply. angry

Tarriffs have been increased in Nigeria a couple of times over the last decade. What happened? Did power supply improve? shocked Oga, leave that side.

If they don't plug the loopholes and fix the system, to reduce losses, we will all continue to move round and round in circles. undecided

So you proponents of price increase.....oya, go ahead and increase. And let us see how many people will pay! sad

Wow..

The DISCOs got it wrong. Laying off engineers in core positions and fixing up non technocrats, just like FASHOLA heads the utility industry, is the biggest mistake ever.

I smile. I smile again.
But we're likely saying same thing

Very well said...you're both saying the same thing.
That's what you get when you ask an accountant to do the work of an electrical engineer...

That's the only way to go. Obviously they are failed investors. Power bills keeps increasing but no improvement in power supply. Jonathan and his gang messed up the sector with outright sale of of Discos without a precondition of retrieving it back if they fail. Now we have to spend billions of dollars to get it back. Back then they were just shouting comparison with mobile telephony up and down without putting into consideration that that the 2 businesses are far different from each other. I don't know why dunces keeps ruling us, we keep moving in diminishing circles, and yet we still live and fire prayers in all religious centres that things are going to change in this country.
We are all foolish in this country. Gush
So is govt that will give us light? Is like u want to go back to d days of NEPA where u wont av light for 2weeks... I pity u... People that want to continue stealing that's why they want to buy it back...

So this Jonathan theory us still lives in some of you? When will you ever wake up? We have seen countries where weak economies have been made great again. What difference has this government made in the lives of people? We have been told that Nigeria has become the poverty capiral of the world. Insecurity, destruction of lives and property has not been tackled by this government; yet you people keep playing the Jonathan tape. When will you move on?
Corruption has taken a more dangerous turn. All the promises have failed. Nigeria has glided to a very dangerous level with the possibility of breaking up. People are arrested arbitrarily. Freedom of speech was guranteed under Jonathan and you could see that no one who has become a political office holder was detained by Jonathan. Today arrests everywhere in the name of hate speech.

Fashola told us that power generation had risen to over 7,000 megawatts. While some believed him, clear eyed people knew it was all political propaganda. If government buys DISCOs back, that is another avenue for embezzlement and looting for some people.

Be honest to yourself. The problem Nigeria faces is corruption. Buhari cannot tackle it. We believed him before 2015, but we can see clearly now the failure. APC has not answer to the problems of this country.

Dude have you ever heard the word 'load rejection'? Yes 7000+mw was achieved at a time but discos refused to evacuate power and distribute to customers. If you read the story properly you will see where it was reported that some gencos closed part of their terminals cos of this

This criminal Govt want to pay them off and still share the companies to themselves.

Waste of resources.

What is needed is law that will make sure the Discos invest in their infrastructure by putting back a ℅ of their profit back to Maintenance of their infrastructure. Make law that pemalizes any disco whose feeder is out on fault for 1 hour, this ensures they always pick load and stop the rejection of load they do indirectly by tripping their feeders
My dear, this your analysis with recommendation is very funny.

Clearly all about politics in this country. Remember Fashola and his assured words some years ago, when he said that it would take nothing to provide electricity in six months? He was the minister under the government of change, with all the big grammar for four years. Everything remained the same.

Discos and Gencos are controlled by the same people. Those who looted public funds and invested in the same institutions, now as private investors.

This country truly needs something drastic to happen so the whole citizens can be set free.

The power sector is worse now under buhari by all standards. GEJ was building 10 NIPP gas turbines during his tenure n then he completed and commissioned 6 of dem before he left, adding about 2800MW to the grid, taking Nigeria to around 5000MW.

Buhari came in and since then we have been unable to generate anywhere near 5000MW, and the national greed has collapsed more than 10 times in this regime.

Barth Nnaji was a former minister under GEJ, we had the best of results with him. He was a professor of mechanical engineering and worked in several power companies before he came here. Anything short of that as minister means outright failure

4 years on, buhari is yet to commission any power plant across Nigeria. U people should stop deceiving urselves.

This regime is to be blamed, the present national grid cannot carry more than 4000 MW, and the govt has not done anything about it.

Where did you learn that GE actually came to buy those assets? Please I need proof. GE never bidded to be part of the privatisation. GE is a smart company and knew that the PHCN assets were very risky and stayed away. GE only do contracts for the then PHCN and the current companies. I have heard this GE talk before and now. I can't keep quiet again. The people that were willing to take the risks and invest in PHCN were those that bought it. Established companies that were knowledgeable in power business stayed away because PHCN was never healthy and was too risky to be invested in which is what that is manifesting now.

That's not true dude. GE as well as Siemens were interested parties preprivatization, you didn't see them in the bidding process because it was done in the Nigerian way
