South-East Governors Write Buhari: Ban Herders With No Cattle & Cattle By Foot by AgencyReport: 8:02am On Aug 21, 2019
Governors in South East, Nigeria, have written to President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to ban the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the region, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the governors are also asking the President to delay the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, and act against insecurity instead.

Igbere TV had reported that the Federal Government, last week, said it was shutting down the Enugu airport for “major repairs” on the “faulty” runway.

This is even as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced that it was degrading the airport for international operations owing to its “runway length”.

But in the letter made available to Igbere TV on Wednesday, the governors are asking the President to rather approve its earlier decision banning herders who have no cattle, as well as the movement of cattle by foot in the South East.

The move is coming three days after Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from the region, was attacked in Germany, by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to the governors, they decided to make the letter public to assuage public allegations that they were not doing enough to check growing insecurity in the region.

Recall that the IPOB had accused the South East governors and other top political leaders in the region of sell out, saying they have never acted on insecurity in the zone.

“We plead with Mr. President that we publish this letter to assuage our people’s feelings who erroneously think that no efforts are being made by the leaders of the South East to tackle insecurity and economic challenges facing the zone and to let them know that her leaders before now have been working very hard without making noise as issues of security must not be discussed in the public,” the letter partly read.

The letter was signed by Mr. David Umahi, Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ebonyi State, on behalf of other governors in the region.

That's the exact word Umahi used.

But I think he meant those hiding under Herdsmen to commit atrocities like Ohaneze Ndigbo claimed.

If approved, rustlers, killer herdsmen are mostly target.

Fulani herders are also Nigerians like you Mr Governor!!! If there is anybody that should be banned, then is DEFINITELY not Fulani herdsmen. You can't just wake up everyday and blame Fulani herdsmen for some of the crimes committed by your own people. I could vividly remember how you guys were already blaming Fulani herdsmen for that Reverend Father's dead, and after the police investigation, it was discovered that your people were the ones that murdered the Rev father. And many of such crimes that were committed by you are foisted on Fulani herdsmen.

I think this is just a show for the news. Herders still thrive alot in the south east
I was in one of their universities a week ago —a medical college to be precise— and I could see herders with their flock. I said welldone..

If their governors and leaders didn't own those cattles, then an herder should be able to discern a bush from an organized terrain of a university.

Lilly-livered governors. Why can't they ban/control herders' movement in their respective states? It is not as if there is no precedence for that. Former governor of Ekiri state, Fayose did it. These same governors will be quick to ban okada riders from the comfort of their executive bedrooms. We shall ask the albino whether he approves of your feeble effort at containing these menace.

The fear of International beatings resetting the brain of greedy politicians.

This will make them to sit up, look at the south east region, high level of infrastructural decay and dilapidation, insecurity of the highest order with security agencies on the roads collecting Roger.
Government schools are gradually going into extinction.

No good hospitals for the masses because of they have looted the funds, yet they run abroad for the slightest health challenge

More beatings to fall on south east politicians until sense fall on them.

Rochas Okorocha, Orji Uzor kalu, T.A. Orji, Okezie Ikpeazu, etc, yam is ready abroad, please come and eat, you are highly invited.

Enough is enough.

Yeah Fulani herdsmen will always trend because the president is a Fulani man. And the last time I checked, 98% of you residing in that side of the Niger don't like the president. So no surprised.

They are not trending because the president is a Fulani man. Buhari is not the first Fulani to ever rule this land.

Fulani herdmen are trending because:

1. Farmers are losing thier livelihood and food shortage is looming
2. Women are being raped and butchered
3. Villages are sacked or living in terror
4. Bandits are roaming the land free and terrorizing people
5. Kiddnapping on highways is becoming a common place.

And this wasn't the case until the Buhari started giving tacit support to the activities of MACBAN aka Fulani Herdsmen.

Yes kidnapping for ransom, murder, etc are old age crime across the land; but the Fulani herdsmen have created a multiplier effect and also blurred the traditional lines of trouble.

To understand the problem and reduce the effect, we MUST return to a time when Fulani Herdsmen were not all over the places with AK47. We must stop the herdsmen from wandering all over the places with or without their cows. Only then can we see clearer when our people are involved; and then we shall deal with them too as we have always done.

But first open grazing must end; and no RUGA for the wicked!

Then they should accept FG's offer by ranching the herders in one place. How do you intend to eliminate them when you outrightly refused to accept ranching and ruga settlements that the fg proposed to you? Or is there another way you intend to eliminate them that we don't know?

Open grazing must end and NO to ruga? And you people still said you want peace? Funny. You can accused the herdsmen for all the atrocities committed in SE, but as long as you reject solutions that will bring lasting peace between the herdsmen and farmers, then you guys are only jokers!!!

And everybody will see that you guys don't like/want peace

Well, SE/SS will not be cowed with threat of war or 'gift' of peace. You have no monopoly of either. We will not trade our land for RUGA; we will not reward murderers with land in our midst. It is not pride; it is who we are! If your people (Fulani herdsmen) continue to molest and kill people accross our land sooner or later, an equal and opposite reaction will ensue. As you know very well, we don't pay heed to our governors and their ilk, especially if they are not on our side.

So we emphatically say NO to Open Grazing; and NO RUGA for the wicked . Not in our land at least.

RUGA will not bring peace; it didn't bring peace in Jos. Even if it will bring peace, we are not willing to trade our land for peace, maybe the Sophiscated ones will; but we are not that 'sophiscated'. We say let's start with JUSTICE first. Justice for the victims of Fulani herdsmen atrocities; and attackers behind bars.

So your people want to steal other people's land with violence and threat of more? Look again guy, it appears the JOKE is you.

Thank you for this reply, fiizznation doesn't know that those wicked herdmen don't even care about tribe. One of their leaders in Zamfara said they resolved to kill 50 northerners for the death one 1 herman. Who thinks that way if not someone posessed by demon.
Kaduna - Abuja is no longer safe for his people or anyone and yet he's feigning ignorant about their wickedness.

Again cattle business is private business. There shall be no FG acquired land in our terroritory for herdsman. FG should stay away from this matter.

If the state government build ranches, they can apply to rent space and keep their cattle. If they can afford land, let them approach the native and buy land and build their ranches. It doesn't make any sense to have all of them in one place with their families. How many people do you need to manage a cattle ranch of 5000 cattle?

Herdsman should approach their business as business and do what other business men do - negotiate. They should humble themself and approach land owners for land; they should follow the process. And if they are not able to meet the requirement, they should go back to Chad, Libya where the President said they came from.
