Oga it’s not crude oil... it’s leaking fuel

This is somehow common, some fuel stations have leaky underground tanks, I wonder what might be the cause? I've experienced this in Ejigbo, behind nnpc bus stop and in Enugu, Nike Road near pipelines fuel stations. It rendered the well and boreholes around the vicinity reeking of fuel and kero for months and years.

The lifespan of an underground tank should be 25 years. That assumes optimal conditions. Fabricated and installed to spec. A tank should be 6mm thick and burie in sharp sand. A lot of tanks are fabricated at 3mm thick and buried anyhow. This is the minimum. Outside this country ranks are built with double shells or composite materials and fitted with leak test devices.

Here it is only the big downstream companies that invest in proper usts.
