In Nigeria University, Professorship role is a 'political" appointment. Once you are in the good books of the current VC and have your doctorate degree, professorship don sure pass for you if you continue to lick the ass of the VC.

Once a VC is appointed, next is to elevate his loyalists to the rank of a professor. It is very common in Nigeria Universities. How many of them have contributed anything significant to the body of knowledge? How many have collaborated with foreign professors to design and produce something that significantly altered the status quo? How many of them have single handedly or jointly solved any pressing developmental challenges in Nigeria?

Go to US Universities and see research in motion and innovation in action.

As for my kids, US universities sure pass - they are too innovative and research minded and receive huge funding.

Johns Hopkins University accepts few PhD students and pay them handsomely. There must be a pressing human challenges before you are offered admission in that university for you to carry out a research and produce a result that will be patented.

Politicians have devalued academics in Nigeria making the office of a professor less attractive e.g during electoral processes that's where You will know that some of this professors are incompetent.

But I always cherish my Supervisor/Professor who supervised my final year project he made me fall in love with Chemistry from my year 1 till I graduated and I was fortunate to still be assigned under him in my finals, He made me enjoy the joy of doing research as an undergraduate then, I pray for him everyday that the knowledge of Chemistry he instill in me together with his colleagues I will continue to teach other Chemistry students till I attain that professorship level too.

Them you can be a professor later.You have to be in the good book of the management before you become a professor in many Nigerian universities. Some lecturers leave from one institution to another in order to be a professor.. Everything has been politicized.... In polytechnic. the highest rank is Chief Lecturer which is equivalent to a university professor. Even the salary disparity between a professor and a CL in polytechnic is very negligible.

Point is, u can be a prof without being a Dr., hence Soyinka. Example, Davido may be appointed professor of popular music at a uni. That makes him a prof regardless his education level

Contribution to knowledge should be the major requirement to qualify as a professor and not only number of years experience as a lecturer, no wonder, now I know why Ekiti has so many professors but practically nothing to show for it only sachet water companies only. No creativity and no practical transfer of theoretical knowledge

Actually, it's 6 million Naira per annum (before tax and other deductions) and you earn that amount only after 10 years as a professor.

for instance if the individual is employed as lecturer 1

A professor must rise through the academic ranks. You were spot on about teaching experience but you fell short on publications.
NUC has a guideline for any tertiary institutions it regulates. Look for it and you'll find all the information you need.
There's a spread comprising Local, National and International Journals. You must meet this spread to qualify. The spread for international journals is nowhere close to 60.

The number is FAR less than 60. It's between 24-32 if my recollection is correct. And these numbers are spread in a fixed ratio between Local, National and Foreign publications.
