Solar Power Plant In BUK Inaugurated (Photos) by BrandSpurNG(op): 1:01pm On Sep 03, 2019
The Federal Government will today (Tuesday) inaugurate the largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa at Bayero University, Kano (BUK), under the Energising Education Programme (EEP).

As a result, 55,815 students and 3,077 staff now have access to electricity supply from the university’s 7.1 megawatt-capacity solar hybrid power plant.

Under the implementation by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Energising Education Programme (EEP) is a federal government intervention focused on developing off-grid dedicated independent power plants, and rehabilitating existing distribution infrastructure to supply clean, safe and reliable power to 37 federal universities and seven affiliated university teaching hospitals.

Commenting on the project, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi, stated that “this is the largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa; one we, as Nigerians, should be very proud of; thanks to the commitment of the federal government towards sustainable energy and education. Students and staff of Bayero University, Kano can now experience learning and teaching in a safer, cleaner and more conducive academic environment.”

One of the major highlights of the events will be the graduation of 20 female students who participated in the Female STEM Students Internship Programme.

The female students, who received practical training during the course of the project construction would be awarded certificates of completion.

Commenting on the impact of the BUK solar hybrid installations, Managing Director, METKA West Africa Limited, the EPC contractor, Mr. Evangelos Kamaris, stated that “the state-of-the-art solar hybrid power plant will result in carbon dioxide savings of 108,875,120Ibs, a feat we as green contractors are proud of.”

BUK is the second project to be commissioned under Phase 1 of the Energising Education Programme that will deliver clean and sustainable energy to nine federal universities and one university teaching hospital in the next four years, using solar hybrid and/or gas-fired captive power plants.

REA is the implementing agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) tasked with the electrification of unserved and underserved communities. The Energising Education Programme (EEP) is an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide sustainable and clean power supply to 37 federal universities and seven university teaching hospitals across Nigeria.

Now this is massive.

But I don't know why I'm always of the opinion that the use of solar panels for electricity is the most expensive renewable energy generation.

Apart from the cost of the solar panels and its accessories, which is much on the high side as compared to the output power, just look at the area it occupies? Forget all the ish that it won't be fueled bla bla bla, those panels are not rugged.

To me, wind mill is the cheapest renewable energy source. My opinion though.

The lies here are too much
First University of nigeria ,nsukka (UNN) has the largest admission capacity and thats just less than 6000 students per year, so thats less than 30,000 students ...so there is absolutely no how BUK can have 20,000 students

7.1MW is just 7100 KVA (approx) and that's for say 23500 people thats like 0.3kva per person which is absolutely no enough

When u tell lies like this ,i know only 2.5% of nigerians are educated but please lie with sense

Better Days ahead.

Spoiler alert, the government is thinking about sharing some of the electricity with some selected West African universities in furtherance of Nigeria's big brother role in ECOWAS.
Just kidding.
Kudos.

but it's more reliable and value for.money than diesel/fuel generator

Kudos to the FG......all the same.

I know about this project, but my fear is maintenance.

Not sure many Nigerians understand the difference between Solar power and the conventional energy.

Solar is run on batteries and most batteries would die within 5 years and would need replacement.
Secondly, we don't know how to conserve energy in this part of the world, as some would not use energy saving equipment.

Wind is the cheapest but not available everywhere like solar. Solar panels are expensive but can last for 20 years or more

hahahahahahaha.......
Esp in a Federal Univ where we see everything as free....

The ones at UI are near comatose...
RE is the way to go and is better as it has a long term better economic potential.

The school can control it by metering....if they want to!

I don't think windmills are cheap with all its moving parts(wear and tear) and the long poles. Panels don't need that much servicing and maintenance.

I dont think its the largest solar system in Africa. That of Morroco is far bigger and supplies Europe. If they say largest hybrid, perhaps yes.
