Hatred is caused by fear. Always. Xenophobia/progroms/Genocide dont just happen. It usually starts with long held animosities between two groups, which builds over years, decades, sometimes centuries. The killings start with a trigger (usually murder/economic upheaval).
In this case, it was the S.A. taxi guy killed by foreign drug dealers. A line was crossed.

People think these incidences are irrational. They are actually very natural. Its the human instinct for survival. And they will keep happening in this world.
