Robert Mugabe is an African hero who will never be forgotten. For those of you blaming him for the collapse of Zimbabwe's economy, you are either ignorant or foolish. This man took back the lands that the British stole from natives and gave back to the original landowners and the UK and their white supremacist brothers in the US and Australia decided to ruin the country in retaliation. Even fellow African countries turned their backs on Zimbabwe and Mugabe and sided with their slavemasters. That's why you can't help but pity this dark continent. Africa is a far way off from being really free. I don't think Africa will have someone like Robert Mugabe in a long time. May his soul rest in peace.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe was indeed a Pan-Africanist and liberation fighter like most of his contemporaries in Zim. He was a war hero and freedom fighter for his people. He'll be greatly missed for his participation in Independence of Southern Rhodesia and transformational policies in the 80s and 90s.

However, towards end of 90s after taken over land from the white minority, his problem was that he didn't have a corresponding plans and implementation strategies to replicate exact or better agricultural robust economy that Zimbabwe was known (food basket of SADEC region) prior to the controversial land reform. He couldn't trust the patriotic and think-tank ability of other Zimbabweans that could have taken Zimbabwe from where he left it to higher heights. Hence he held unto power, instead of grooming and handing over to any of his good proteges (if ZANU-PF must always produce the country's president).
His sycophants praised him to his death. African leaders lack and do not want anybody that will tell them the truth. When a leader abhors constructive criticism, he'll breed multitudes of sychophants.
Every leader should be able to know when his ideas and policies are directly or indirectly affecting his people's wellbeing, no matter how beautiful the ideas and policies may look.
Mandela remains the true African political icon and Pan-Africanist.

Mugabe was no doubt one of the most educated leaders in the entire world. He had three university degrees from three different universities. In addition to that, he was a great reader who was inspired by great revolutionaries in history,like Karl Marx, V. I Lenin, Mao Zedong and others. The truth is only few African leaders compared with Mugabe in terms of knowledge and ideology. Why do you think he was so hated by the west? It was due to his understanding of history and the conspiracy of the western world to keep African underdeveloped forever. The problem of Mugabe with the western world was not one of democracy as they tried to make us believe. The problem stemmed from Mugabe's anti-imperialist agenda and his doggedness in pursuing the land redistribution policy. He refused to be caged like Mandela which was why the western media attempted to destroy him. During his time as Zimbabwe president, he renamed the country from his former colonial name, Rhodesia. He also renamed the capital city from its former colonial english name to an African name. All these radical policies did not go well with the western world. Lack of democracy in Zimbabwe was just a pretext to sanction and ultimately destroy Zimbabwe's economy. The underlying reason was that Mugabe was a radical anti-imperialist stateman who came to power through a revolutionary struggle. Despite all the mistakes,he will forever remain a great African leader who remained truly committed to his political ideals even till his dying days.

What massive gang up by the West are you talking about? The opposite was actually the case.

The West granted the country lots of aid he Mugabe said as much and appreciated it. The fall of Mugabe and with it Zimbabwe started when it was obvious he did not want to step down. He wanted to be there for life.

In the 1980's were the Cold War still raged, the West put up with many dictators who were loyal to them rather than see them embrace the USSR instead.

By the 1990, the Cold War was coming to an end and the West gradually stopped supporting dictators. That was what brought the fall of Mobutu Sese Seko. If there was still the Cold War, the West would have sent troops to stop Kabila boys (actually Kagame boys) from toppling him.

Mugabe had been in power since 1980 and should have stepped down in 1988. He was still there in the 1990's. B y the mid 1990's when the West demanded free and fair elections for which was not fond of at all, that was when all started crashing. It was this bid to hold on to power by any means possible led him to make economically ruinous policies that eventually collapsed the economy and led to hyperinflation.
