Africa Set To Become The Next Big Mobile Market As Global Investors Recognize Co by Pekuliar: 12:02pm On Mar 20, 2019
According to a Mobile Report for Africa released by Jumia, Africa’s leading e-commerce platform, the continent’s real output growth is expected to reach 4.1% by the end of 2019 from an estimated 3.5% in 2018. The growth is expected as a result of improvement in macroeconomic conditions in the continent.

The Mobile Economy contributed $110 billion to Africa’s GDP (7% of the total GDP) in 2017 and is expected to generate more than $150 billion (approximately 7.9% of GDP) by 2022. The mobile technologies and services industry further supported 3 million jobs in 2017.

A growing population of 1.28 billion people, 42% of which are in cities, a snowballing middle class expected to reach 1.1 billion out of the 2.5 billion Africans by 2050 – leading to a higher purchasing power – are among the considerations for Africa’s mobile explosion, explains Jumia’s Josephine Wawira.

Other factors that have driven much of Africa’s growth in mobile subscriptions include more affordable smartphones, declining mobile data plans, the efficiency brought about by smartphones including online shopping or purchases, mobile payments, as well as searching for information, she says.

“Nevertheless, the growth of the mobile sector will remain uneven, as the 54 African countries record varying performances, both in their respective mobile markets and the entire economies,” Wawira continued.

Jumia reports that in 2018, Africa had 255 million smartphone connections, which is equivalent to 36% of the total population. This is against a 444 million mobile subscriber base in the continent by 2017.

By 2025, there are expected to be approximately 690 million smartphones in Sub-Saharan Africa, equating to a connection of about 66%.

Jumia – Africa’s leading e-commerce platform – has reported a decreasing average price of smartphones over the last three years. The average amount spent to purchase a smartphone on the platform in 2016 stood at 99 USD, which reduced to 96 USD in 2017 and 95 USD in 2018 respectively.

Jumia notes that Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing a high migration rate to mobile broadband-capable connections. In fact, 5G connections expected to launch in Africa in 2021. The company has concluded that 2019 is undeniably the year to prioritize investments in Africa’s mobile market in order to leverage this monetary opportunity.

I have been reading a lot of articles....about the growth in mobile sector in Africa and Nigeria.

Its obvious that the brands that are pushing this mobile sector are a few which I will say that TECNO mobile is number one...and other brands like Infinix etc

Samsung recently release the 1TB phone which I learnt is 700k or more. And I started wondering who they made the phone for?

Seeing and coming across such a nice article always give me hope that everyone in Nigeria can now afford to use a phone that has internet services...my mum now can do whatsapp, buy things online and as well browse after I purchased spark 2 for her. Unlike when one can not afford a phone that is costly...

These is contributing in the growth of Africa and Nigeria...our government are suppose to look into this sector ...

The mobile phone market in Africa is really growing at a fast pace, and there are just a few companies leading this charge, with Tecno in front position. I see a better connected Africa in no distant time.

Africa is now a top smartphone market for different brands with Tecno having a larger share of the market.

Yehhh. Seriously I would say tecno did well over the years and the are one of the phone makers that is boosting Africa up. Just take a look at the camon 11 for example. Tecno phones are very cheap and every one could afford a phone with great quality. They really helped Africa alot
