The date is Wednesday, April 12 1972.


I stumbled upon this Footage of the execution by firing squad of a man convicted of armed robbery in Nigeria. The execution took place at Victoria Island's Bar Beach in Lagos.

Footage of this execution was used in Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1975 film, "The Passenger", which starred Jack Nicholson as a television journalist traveling in Africa. The scene was fictionalised as the execution of a political leader.

He clearly said his words were used against him .. Also saying tho father inlaw killed him .. But the mp said he his an armed robber .. From what he said .. He already knew he was going to die ..because his word were used against him and he didn't have a lawyer .. But he should have been tried further .. He looks like he robbed and got exposed by his father inlaw .. Who didn't like a thief to married his daughter .. Well very touching story

If he's innocent or guilty, i bet the person's who accused him, tried him and shot him are all dead now, even the camera men and journalists may all be dead now. We can't run away from dying, either now or later we shall all die.

With every second that passes a man goes closer to his grave.

Theres nothing more satisfying at death knowing that u used the little time u lived to do good to others and serve God faithfully,

The sound quality of this video clip is so good that I am still not sure whether this is a movie scene, or real footage of a public execution.

The prisoner was NOT properly tried, and in his own words, was denied access to a lawyer during the extraction of his purported "confession" in the police station.

Back in Nigeria's recent dark past under military rule, quite a few non-violent petty criminals, and several innocent people were among those who were marched out and shot at the beach by army firing squads, after trials that were often abrupt and patently flawed.

Truth be told, Nigeria's prisons, and even the cells of the condemned therein, are still teeming with people "awaiting trial", who, if without family members prepared to purchase freedom, can and do die in prison, without the benefit of ANY trial.

This video brings back great nostalgia of the public executions of the military years.
Apologies to the Indomie and Minimie generation who would never relate to this.

For us, it was an act of patriotism to watch our country being rid of people who were against it's greatness.

We watched in keenness.
From watching them marched out of the Black Maria, to being prepared at the stake of drums, then having their last words taken and final prayers given.
Some took their coming doom in good faith while others cried like babies before the volleys of bullet from the soldiers shut their mouths up for them.

I always looked forward to going to Coal camp in Enugu back in the days to watch those live executions.
I was so passionate that I remember not eating for two days just because I didn't witness that of Mamman Vasta.

In retrospect,
It wasn't about patriotism, I was just becoming a psycho.

They should bring this back

Most of them were petty criminals then . Big criminals rule Nigeria now.

We need it back for our politicians. It's the only way sanity can be restored back in our national politics. And then we will begin to reap the dividends as an oil nation.

These forms of executions are no longer common in 9ja. It's mostly extrajudicial killings that is prevalent these days
