SenecaTheYonger:Yes. Closing these borders have just made a lot of people super rich and by people I mean smugglers. They'll now start using Bush paths and wide oceans to move merchandise and in turn hike the price of their commodities in other countries, since a lot of their competitors have been handicapped by the border closure. And we all know what happens when a criminal gets very rich.. ![]() It means a lot of your uniform men are going to die if they dare oppose the smuggler's interest. I can't break everything down for many reasons. God be with the Nigeria customs ![]() |

Please crest time to come to border to see spoilt and stranded goods at Seme border alone 743 trucks loaded with dutiable goods are perishing. The duty of these goods worth millions had been paid to government. Don't worry by January next year if these borders are not opened you guys in the city will feel the heat. Now its only the importers and exporters and agents are feeling the heat. |

buharified009:don't worry by January next year if these borders are not opened you guys in the city will feel the heat of border closure. Go and ask those who buy cars before the ban of tokubo cars on land border. They will tell you how cars are expensive. Now you close border. By next year bag of rice would be #30k, cooking oil Gerry can #18k. 7.5% VAT. Just remember this |

Iogobenz:Let them hike the prices up and get richer, it still encourages local farmers and producers to produce more because they too make more profit than before, more people go into production and farming. With time, supply grows more than demand and those smugglers would see no incentive continuing and the Nigerian people and government win finally. Those smugglers may even start smuggling our local rice into other countries then seeing that ours is far cheaper then. |

adioolayi:I hope after reading the link you will find time to go to any land border to confirm for your self and see spoilt and stranded goods at the border. For your information, smugglers are still having their way at the border but this closure only affects those doing legit work. Please confirm before you argue |

Empredboy:Let that bag of rice rise to 50k, the borders remain closed. Better go open a rice farm and make your millions as so many Nigerians are going into it now and tell your friends to use the seaports for now till the Benin Rep government and people start getting some sense. |

Area4Area:In Nigeria? You are a dreamer. Please give me one product or example that has followed this path you outlined. Nigeria economics is jungle economics. It is by far different from what you read in your books at school, I can't even explain it. This move only harms the legit businesses that pay duty to government. The smugglers will continue to smuggle at a higher price. Our country singlehandedly caused this problem over the years and trust Nigerians, blessed with selective amnesia, to act like we don't know where the problem is coming from. The real question is, why do importers prefer to bring in goods via Contonou ports than Nigerian ports? When you begin to answer this question with a rational mind, you will realise the foolery that is Nigeria. |

Empredboy:Thank God I have seen somebody seeing it from my perspective.. Perishable goods with expiry date just wasting there.. People's millions wallowing.. Even those that took loan to get goods.. All to no avail, if you ask me I will say this border closure was voluntarily done to frustrate the igbos, cos they are mostly the importers. Dormorages already Pilling up in millions.. God help us! |

| Re: Border Closure: Daily PMS Consumption Drops From 60m To 52m Litres — FG by Empredboy(m): 1:00pm On Oct 11, 2019 |
alphaNomega:importers prefer bringing goods through land border when importing from west Africa because it's faster than sea. Also locations to the sea matters. You won't expect someone importing goods from Burkina Faso or Mali to bring it to Cotonuo port before taking it to Lagos and the destination is kano. |
| Re: Border Closure: Daily PMS Consumption Drops From 60m To 52m Litres — FG by Empredboy(m): 1:03pm On Oct 11, 2019 |
Area4Area:do you know now that the smuggling has increased with increase price? If rice rises to #50k what will salary earners and pensioners feed on? Please I am against smuggling but ask if the government has provided enough rice in the country to meet our needs? Can government fight smuggling? Even America can't. |
| Re: Border Closure: Daily PMS Consumption Drops From 60m To 52m Litres — FG by Empredboy(m): 1:13pm On Oct 11, 2019 |
Area4Area:so if I want to import craft from Mali I should rent truck to Cotonuo port before taking it to Lagos port then rent truck again to Kaduna? Won't it break in the process of transloading? Do you know how long it will take me do that instead of going through land border? What now happens to ECOWAS law? Also if I want to export nigercin wire in Ikeja to bukinafaso I should take to apapa port and stay in the apapa traffick for weeks before exporting to Cotonuo, then start a 2000km journey to Burkina Faso? Do you know how stressful and long the journey will be? I beg border closure is affecting both importers and exporters. Those who work in factories in Ikeja and alaba will tell you. Wait until they start to down size. Our rubbers slippers, tanks, wires, bed forms are in high demand in west Africa. Go and check the record |

Empredboy:It's obvious that you're either related or close to someone into smuggling, advice that person to start rice farming, importers and exporters can still use our ports, borders remain shut till Benin Rep government and people start getting some sense |

muystoy:1. Before I answer your question, let me explain something. 2. IN Nigeria, guys import fuel at N200 and above, and sell it at N137-39 to marketers . The subsidy payment just covers the difference between cost of import and cost of sale. 3.As a result, importers of fuel cannot make enough profit. In essence, one is importing fuel at N200, and selling it at N137 per liter(to marketers, who sell at N145). Government then pays a subsidy of N63 per liter or less...meaning you don't make a profit. (Ideally, if there was no subsidy, fuel would cost N300 ) 4.Meanwhile in Benin Republic, Niger and Cameroon, fuel is about N300 per liter (No subsidy). 5.So, our importers smuggle fuel to Niger, Cameroon and Benin, sell it above N300, and make a sweet profit...while claiming subsidy here in Nigeria. 6.So long as fuel sells below N145 here...smuggling is going to continue. The only way out is for subsides to go on PMS. While fuel would cost N300 and above (and eat half of my salary monthly)...there won't be smuggling because profits are now being made. These profits would then be reinvested in new refinereis, plus more investors from home and abroad would come in. More Dangote-type refinereis would be built., producton would fall...and the price of fuel would fall below N200 again, if not less. |

Empredboy:Let the Benin Rep government and people start to cooperate with Nigeria then the closure can be relaxed but for now it remains shut, they can't continue hurting our economy with their sabotage |

Iogobenz:No, not exactly 1.It is getting tough for smugglers. See the report we are commenting on. Because smuggling has been made difficult, false claims for subsidy have fallen...meaning that the amount of fuel imported into this country has fallen. 2.There was a report from Daura, Bubu's home base...where it was mentioned that many of the youth who were into smuggling along bush paths were finding it difficult to smuggle stuff. |

Iogobenz:You can still import rice through our ports, we all know that some smuggling will still take place but no more on the scale it happened before |
| Re: Border Closure: Daily PMS Consumption Drops From 60m To 52m Litres — FG by Iogobenz(m): 1:23pm On Oct 11, 2019 |
PoliticalWitch:It is getting tough for petty smugglers. Thousands of bags are still coming in. The gov't has succeeded in putting out small timers who passed through seme and co and have given the "sabi boys" who never used borders a FREE pass to amass wealth. Quantity dropped no doubt but the effect of it is insignificant to be able to let local produce sell, while smuggler barons keep piling up cash to be able to start a war with customs when they want to start blocking porous territories. |

Area4Area:for your information I am not a smuggler but a duty payer. Let me ask you is the border closure targeted at rice and petrol only? Or there more? If you do answer then we can discuss |
