THE DIVORCE PAPERS - EPISODE TWO.



Koku’s eyes opened slowly. It was already morning. He made a sharp glance at the wall clock and jumped off the sofa. “Shit!” He rushed inside the room to freshen up and hurried out. He barely slept overnight, just thinking about what he could do. He just slept off around past five that morning and he woke up some minutes to eight. He was meant to be in a board meeting before catching his flight by eleven that same morning and now, the meeting was already about an hour gone and he was still at home.
He slipped into a black shirt and blue pants, picking up the briefcase in the room and put on his shoe in the living room. He got outside when he remembered that he didn’t pick his mobile phone and dashed back into the living room to pick it up. He didn’t focus on his dressing, everything was odd about him that morning. He knew he had no way to beat the traffic anymore. How come no one even called his line! He hit his steering rack as he hopped into the vehicle and punched the power button of his phone.
His eyes widened as he saw that he had missed fourty seven calls already. He marched the accelerator and halted by the gate. “Please, when my wife comes back help me tell her that I lo…” He stopped and rolled his eyes. “Tell her I travelled to South Africa and I will be back in two days. Do you understand?”
The young man nodded. “Yes sir, I do.”
“Good.” He replied and set out. He almost told the gatekeeper to help him tell his wife that he loved her. He wasn’t sure if he was that alright anymore. His boss had called him severally, his best friend and colleague - Mark had also called him. How sure was he that he would be able to make a sensible presentation? He hasn’t even done his slides, haven’t had time to sit down and re-examine the documents he was given at work. He expected his phone to ring but no one called him again till he got to work.
“Good morning.” He greeted as he entered the board room. He stood by the door, not able to look at anyone in the eyes. That was his first time, though. Koku has always been punctual. A man of high standards who liked to stand by whatever he taught people. He was known for this and also liked for it in the office. But how would he explain what made him come late today? How would he tell them that he could not sleep overnight because his wife left him?
“Mr. Adeyemi.” He heard his boss mention his name.
He raised his head slowly to meet his boss’ angry face. His boss had never looked at him like this before, this was also the first time he was making such mistake and he looked like he was going to crucify Koku.
“Mr Adeyemi!” He called again, this time more firmly.
“Sir.” He answered and pressed his lips together.
“Where are you coming from?”
He swallowed. “Home, sir. I actually…”
“Just calm down and take the question one after the other. You are coming from home?”
He nodded. “Yes sir. I am coming from home.”
He tittered. “Everyone should excuse us, except Mark.” He hit the table as he ordered. In no time, the board room became empty. Was there more to this issue than just coming late? He had thought as he occasionally glanced at Mark.
“We called your wife, Mr. Adeyemi. She said you didn’t come home yesterday.”
Koku frowned. “Debbie?”
“You are the one who knows the name of your wife, Mr. Adeyemi. We called her, as your next of kin and she told us that you didn’t come home, and you have always been like that, spending time with girl outside and all.”
“Mark!” Koku called out.
“I know you two are best friends that is why I asked him to wait behind. At least this report came from your wife, could she be lying?”
“No, my wife does not lie.” He replied.
“It is even obvious with the way you look and you are roughly dressed this morning. Mr. Adeyemi, you are a model to many here but you just shattered everything.”
“Sir.” Koku’s heart hurt as he heard but still couldn’t talk about it. How would he pull his wife down before his boss and colleagues? He would prefer to shatter his own integrity and build it back while they maintained the respect for his wife. Was she even the wife anymore? At least no one knows about the divorce yet, enough reason to still keep it a secret from everyone.
“What do you want to say, Mr. Adeyemi?”
He shook his head. “I am sorry sir.”
“No, don’t be. I should be the one who is sorry. Your wife said you have lost your wedding ring, perhaps you have given it to one of the sluts you sleep around with. On this note, you will not be going to South Africa with us anymore.”
“Sir!”
“Just hold on and let me complete what I have to say. Mr. Adeyemi, you are also suspended till further notice. The secretary will give you the letter once you step out. This is not based on your coming late, Mr. Adeyemi. This is based on your home, I don’t think I can work with a man that cannot build his home. How are you going to build a beautiful business for the company? Imagine how a married man appears on a day like this! I am disappointed, Mr. Adeyemi.”
Koku bowed his head. “I am sorry sir. Thank you for everything sir.” He turned around and left the office.”

“Why did you do that, Debbie? That could cause him his job.”
Debbie shrugged. “Do I look like I care?”
There was silence for few seconds as Sade applied her lip gloss and pressed her lips together to make it even. “So, you seem to be the one who talk and advise me about being good, being spiritual and being for Jesus. But would Jesus have done this if he were to be in your shoes?”
Debbie chuckled. “Do you know there was a point in the Bible that it was recorded even Jesus entered the temple to flog people who were buying and selling.”
“You know what, I don’t even know the Bible before, so I will assume you won. But what I know is that I have never been in support of Koku, yet I feel this is going too far. You have dropped the divorce papers already, why act along as though you are still married to him?”
“Sade, you are running late. You know I just a chef and I have a lot of people working under me. I can decide that I am not going to work today, no one will hold me to it. Don’t let that your stupid boss sack you while you are poking your nose into my affair.”
“I am set already.” Sade picked her bag. “I won’t let you put me into trouble while I am trying to save you from yours.” She dashed out.
“Just take it easy.”
Debbie saw Sade hurry back to the door again. “Did I tell you Ayo is coming today?” Sade asked.
Debbie shrugged. “I am just getting to know the name, but it is not my business.”
“I am just being official. You know, in case you have to play some spiritual songs overnight so your ears won’t catch wrong sounds.” She winked and disappeared.
Debbie shook her head and hissed.

“Koku!” Mark called him as he walked towards his car. There was nothing more to wait for at the office. He turned and saw Mark approach him, he knew Mark would have nothing more to ask than to know if there was any issue between him and his wife.
“Guy, how far?”
Koku smiled. “I am fine.”
“Why would your wife say such? I am not addressing the fact that you did what you did now, Koku. But I felt this is personal and she could have covered up for you than just breaking the jar.”
Koku smile widened to a grin. “Mark, it must have been a mistake from her part. And at least she wasn’t totally wrong, she must have spoken out of pain and anger. It is entirely my fault, not hers.”
“But that was too poor, the phone was on speaker, everyone heard that, buddy. I didn’t expect it from her, she really fumbled.”
Koku grabbed Mark by his shirt angrily. “You see the other side of me the moment you try to disrespect my wife. I have told you it must have been done due to pain and anger, what more do you want to hear? Guy, I cherish my wife more than this friendship.”
Mark calmed down as he gently remove Koku’s hands from his shirt. “You have rumpled my shirt, Koku. What have I said? By the way, why would you also be spending nights with some other girls?”
He looked away and stared back at Mark. “It is not something I can explain now, but I didn’t sleep around with any girl, keep that in mind.” He unlocked his car and opened the door.
“Buddy, I am lost here! You barely explained anything to me. What is going on between you and Debbie? Where is your wedding ring?”
“Oh, the wedding ring? I forgot it somewhere. I should get it today.”
“Where is the somewhere?”
“You know…” Koku drawled. “See, never mind.”
“Koku!” He called out as Koku entered his car and slammed the door. He stood there and watched him drive off.
He picked his phone to make a call. “Tina, are you at home?” Koku said to the receiver.
“I was planning to go to the clinic in the afternoon. Are you not going to South Africa again?”
“I am on my way to your place.” He replied and dropped the call.

Koku hit the gate and leaned against the wall between the pedestrian gate and the main gate for vehicles.
“Yeah, I am coming.” He heard Tina’s voice approaching and in no time, the gate was unlocked.
“Tina, why?” He threw at her as he saw her.
“Why what? Come inside and lock the gate.” She replied as she swayed inside the house.
Koku stood there for few seconds before he locked the gate and walked inside.
“How are you, Koku?” Tina grinned at him as he entered.
Koku glared at her. “Where is my wedding ring?”
She grinned again, this time it was wider and obviously mischievous. “What do you want to eat, dear. I know you wouldn’t have eaten anything since yesterday.”
“What makes you think I wouldn’t have eaten anything?”
She shrugged. “Your wife wouldn’t have cooked for you because you guys had issues.”
“She is not that type of person, do you understand?
“So sweet.” She winked. “I love how you cover her up everytime.”
“I am not covering her up, I am simply explaining to you who she really is.”
“Spare me, Koku!” She snapped it off. “Why are you still standing? Come and have your seat.”
“Tina!” Koku clasped his hands.
“I think it’s about time you started addressing me as what you called me the first time we met. I mean, Dr. Tina.” She winked again.
“That was because you were a Doctor.”
“So have I changed profession now?”
Koku hissed. “You are nothing better than an assassin presently.”
Tina laughed hard. “I was a life saver then, now I am worse than assassin? What have I done to harm you?”
“How did you manage to get my wedding ring off me, Tina? That isn’t my point right now, just give me my wedding ring back.”
“You know if I haven’t taken the ring, you wouldn’t have come back here, Koku?”
“And now that I am here, just give me the ring and let me go.”
“You barely gave me a space to talk yesterday, Koku.”
“That is because I don’t think there is anything you want to say that is going to justify trying to get through to me.”
“It all started with you, Koku.”
“I apologized and I said we should just move on. When did hearing become this hard?”
“You think it is so easy to stop loving someone you have been loving when he reciprocated the love once?”
“That simple sentence was spoilt with - loving, love and whatever. I don’t even want to understand. It is only my wife that I love.”
“I am not saying that you should leave your wife, dear. This thing is what everyone does.”
“But who told you I am everyone?”
“Who told you even your wife is not doing it?”
Koku’s face tightened up. “I would have pounced on you if not that you are a lady. I would have given you the number of punches that you deserve for opening that dung you call mouth to say nonsense about my wife.”
“It might not change the fact that everyone, including your wife does this!”
“Tina!” He took a step forward and clasped his hands.
“Everyone is a damn liar, Koku.”
“One more word from you and I will slap you, Tina.”
“All I know is just that you are not leaving here today. I will stab going to clinic today.”
“You are a Doctor, Tina. You have lives to deal with and you are not going to attend to them?”
She chuckled. “If I die, another Doctor would treat them. Come, sit here. I have something to talk to you about.”

It was eight in the evening. Sade dropped her phone and looked at Debbie. “He is here.” She announced as popped to her feet.
“Should I fry beans?” Debbie glared back at her.
“If you like, fry it.”
Debbie stood up and walked inside the room. In no time, Sade came in with her supposed boyfriend. He seemed younger than her even with the beards he had. He was clad in a white shirt and black pants. They were chatting as they stepped into the living room.
“I called you more than ten times during the day and you didn’t pick up my call, Ayo.” Sade mumbled as she sat down.
Ayo licked his lower lip. “I am sorry baby girl, I was busy and I thought I would see you today so there is no point.”
Sade threw her hands in the air. “No point talking to me, right?”
He grinned and licked his lip again. It was an attribute he was used to. You know, all the sweet boys that licks lips to make it continually shine and attractive to kiss? Exactly.
“Baby, I am sorry.” He opened his arms to hug her as he stood before her.
“Leave me.” Sade seemed angry already.
“Babe, I am serious. I am sorry.”
She pushed him to shun him and he tripped and fell, using his head to shatter the small glass stool by the chair. Sade hurried towards him as he gasped. She kept calling his name, kneeling beside him till she found out there was no movement anymore. “Ayo.” She shook his head but it seemed like there was no sign of life. He was already bleeding and the collar of his white shirt was soaked with blood already, her cloth was getting drenched too.
“Debbie!” She screamed the name as much as she could and Debbie hurried out to meet her. Debbie was afraid because of the way her name was called, she felt maybe Ayo was beating her up or maybe they found a snake.
“What is it?”
“He is dead.” Sade told her.
“What?” Debbie walked towards her and stared at Ayo for a moment. “What happened?”
“I pushed him and he fell, hitting his head against…”
“His head broke the stool?”
Sade nodded, panicking.
“Let us take him to the hospital immediately.” She said and turned around to pick something in the room so they could rush him to the hospital.
“Debbie.” Sade called to stop her.
“He is not breathing anymore.”
“That is why I said hospital. We have to go so fast before it gets worse.”
“I can’t take him to the hospital, he is dead!” Sade shouted.
“Wait, what really happened? It hasn’t reached five minutes that he got here and you will just tell me he is dead? Let’s go to the hospital, my friend.”
“I should take him to the clinic and be in the danger of being arrested, is that not it? This guy on the floor is dead.”
Debbie shivered. “It is not possible, Sade. And we are not doctors, he might still be alive.”
“I cannot take him to the clinic.” Sade disagreed.
“What should we now do? You are just being stubborn!” Debbie was angry already.
“We go and dispose his body somewhere.”
“What!” Debbie exclaimed.
“If you know you are not doing this, just known we are in this together. I really don’t know much about him and I can’t get into trouble because I mistakenly pushed him.”
“Why are you this calm, Sade? Have you done this before? Are you not scared at all? Does this guy not have family too?”
“Stay there and be asking me stupid questions, Debbie. We go to jail because he has families right?”
Debbie shivered.
“Move closer and let us take him to the car, please.” Sade called her.
Debbie took some steps closer to her, still shivering....

THE DIVORCE PAPERS - 03

Koku’s eyes opened gradually and adjusted to the brightness of the living room. He slept off since afternoon when he ate lunch at Tina’s place. He had made up his mind that he wouldn’t do anything nasty with Tina to ruin his reputation. She had still not given him his wedding ring till she cooked for him and he slept on the sofa thereafter. “It’s night already, Tina.” He rubbed his eyes.
“I know you must be very tired. That reminds me, Koku. Why didn’t you go to South Africa again?”
Koku shrugged. “I don’t have any reason, just didn’t feel like going.”
Tina shook her head. “That is a lie, Koku. Please can you tell me what is going on?” She sounded so concerned.
Koku smiled. “You are really an actress, Tina. Whoever sees you would think that you really mean all you are saying.”
Tina chuckled. She knew Koku would not believe her but she really cared to know. Their first meeting was the day Koku visited the hospital when he was sick and it was Dr. Tina that attended to him. She was a very beautiful and stunning young woman and the first Doctor he would ever find with a good handwriting. He had gone to the hospital alone that day because Debbie said she didn’t have time to drive him to the clinic because he had offended her so she left for her own place of work.
Tina prescribed drugs for Koku and asked him if he could still drive home or he should just wait behind and rest till evening before going. Koku had assured her that he would be fine by himself. He barely got to the door of Tina’s office when he felt nauseated and asked where he could vomit urgently. Tina led him to her office restroom and stayed with him till he vomited all he could and helped him to the stretcher in her office to lay for a while.
“Should I call your wife?” She asked Koku and he refused, telling her his wife was busy. She had seen his wedding ring and his phone wallpaper that her eyes had caught, it showed his image and that of a woman who was obviously more than a friend.
“Where do you stay?” Tina asked Koku.
He told her, shutting his eyes and placing his hand on his forehead.
“Your head still aches, right?”
“It’s banging.” He replied her.
“It’s fever. I might have to give you drip. Just hold on.” She told him and went out to call a nurse to get her all she would be needing as soon as possible. “So I just need you to rest well and gather strength before you think of going home.”
She fixed the drip and got back to her seat to continue what she doing. The drip finished in less than two hours and fixed another one which was moved slower than the first. His phone was on Tina’s table as he was resting. It was past six that evening when Tina had gotten him what to eat and told him it was time for another Doctor to take over.
“I think I should leave already.”
Tina refused. “I think it is going to be best for you to stay within the reach of Doctor, at least till tomorrow.”
“Can you please help me with my phone?”
She gave him his phone and he saw that Debbie didn’t even call him. He couldn’t agree to go home with the present disposition of Debbie towards him at that moment. How sure was he that she would attend to him if he had any crisis?
“Thank you so much for the food. Please how much am I to give you?” Koku asked.
“Please.” She grinned. “I have to take care of my patient.”
“Your type of Doctor is rare. I don’t think I have ever found such a nice Doctor before. They would even shout at you in hospitals, the nurses would be rude and they see it as if it is a privilege that one has that they are treating him.”
Tina shone her beautiful set of white teeth. She suddenly appeared so beautiful, she was truly beautiful. A perfect description of black and shine. Her hair was neatly packed to a side and she looked smart and most importantly, she was a lovebeing.
“We don’t do that here.” Tina said, laughing.
“That’s a line from this movie, Black Panther.” Koku told her.
“Really? Been hearing about the movie but haven’t gone to see it.”
“Really? Oh, you are a Doctor. What’s your name by the way?” Koku was loving the conversation already. The only times he had the privilege of having this nice time with Debbie was the first time they talked after the conference where he was the guest speaker and when he was after her as well. She seemed not to ever have a sense of stimulating a discussion, before they mentioned two lines, Jesus Christ would have meddled into the talk, Holy Spirit, the Bible, the Church or being spiritual would have found their way.
“Tina.” She replied him.
“Dr. Tina.” He grinned.
“See, eat your food. I have to leave now, my colleague will soon be here to take over.”
“Wait. You said all I need to do is to be within the reach of a Doctor, right?”
She nodded. “Yes you need it, what if there’s a cause for emergency? I am just suggesting, you know there was a patient who as discharged and he died that night because things grew from bad to worse. I think the way people have been treated by some Doctors and nurses in many hospitals has caused them not to like coming to the hospital and if they eventually do, they wouldn’t want to spend the night or stay so long.”
“If all I need is to be with a Doctor, then…” He widened his eyes and raised his shoulder.
Tina chuckled. “What if I stay with my parents?”
“What if you don’t?”
The whole saga began from the talk, they went on to see Black Panther in the cinema later that week. Not coming home that night was what caused Debbie to also think he had Koku had been sleeping around because she didn’t want to believe his lie that he was in the clinic. She had called him late into the night that day and he told her he was already admitted and she offered to come but Koku refused.

“Do you know I just remembered that day you came to the clinc?” Tina grinned.
“The day my problems heightened, you mean?”
Tina laughed. “Frankly speaking, Koku. I love a lot of things about you. I am not flirting with you right now. I love how you kicked your conversations off with me that day, I love the fact that you really didn’t have a bad intention with me until I stupidly fell for you. I know your wife has the best gift as a man.”
“Will that make you give me my wedding ring already?”
Tina seemed to be looking into the thin air as she smiled. “I wish I could get a man like you, someone I can trust that won’t cheat even if there exists pressure all around. But I know you are not happy. I give up trying to win you, Koku. I sincerely give up. I just want to be your friend, just a friend with a plane mind.” She told him.
“You?” Koku laughed, clapping his hands together.
“I actually mean everything I am saying, Koku. What is it with you and your wife?”
“Nothing.” He replied.
“Or have you made a mistake I don’t even know? You know I feel you came here for something more than this ring, Koku. I don’t mean anything nasty now. I feel you are burdened and you wish you could speak but as much…”
“Tina! I am fine. I have to go home now, my wife will be waiting for me.”
“Do you know why I took the ring?” Tina asked.
He shrugged. “How would I know?”
“You told me that you would never come here again, that is why I did all I did yesterday as though I was seducing you. I didn’t have anything ulterior in mind, of a truth. I just needed to take your ring off you, make you come back. I have been your friend for few months now and I still know you barely know anything about me.”
Koku’s eyes were fixed on her. She seemed to be more serious that she has always been. “What exactly do you want from me?” He asked her.
“Friendship.” She shrugged.
“What if I say no?”
“I will give you your ring and we never meet again.”
Koku looked away.

“So pick his legs.” Sade told Debbie.
“Sade, I still feel…”
Sade shot a glare at Debbie. “Please don’t bring any spiritual sister mentality to this thing, Debbie. Do you want to go to jail? Do you think they will spare you because you are pregnant?”
“Why do you keep mentioning us? Did I push him?”
Sade clasped her hands. “They won’t hear that story when they come.”
“Sade, I am scared.”
“I am sorry we have to do this, we will ask for the forgiveness from God after this is done.”
Debbie picked his legs while Sade lifted him from his shoulders and they moved towards the car. “We cannot pass the road side, Debbie. We will pass this bush side, it leads to some bushy place too that is quiet. You know we cannot drop him anywhere near this place.”
“Okay.”

“Have I ever told you I was once in a relationship?” Tina told Koku as she stood up and began to pace around.
“No.” Koku replied.
“His name is Ayo. One cute devil like that.” She smiled. “He was the first person I ever gave my body too. Actually, the only person. He explored me as though he truly loved me but he left me eventually. He had other ladies that were giving him money, he was a kind of guy who just used to sleep with ladies up and down. That was the person I fell in love with. I tried my best to change him, I tried all I could to make him really mine and be a one woman guy but even though it cost my body, it still didn’t work. You know what, Koku?” She stopped abruptly.
“What?”
“He just broke up that day and what even pained me was not that he broke up, he did it right in front of another lady.” She chuckled. “The lady he loved and would want to spend the rest of his life with, according to him. I felt so horrible. Kit was from him I first heard what I kept saying in the morning, that phrase that everyone is a liar, everyone is doing this bad things. I couldn’t even see any sensible guy around me, it just seemed like every one of them was either double-dating, having one sugar mummy, and all. At first, I said I wouldn’t even love any guy, I would just be on my own. On the other hand, I felt what is the essence? Let me also enjoy life with whoever I meet, whether married or single. I felt I wouldn’t care if the fellow has another babe or not, that I wouldn’t plan to be faithful as well so I wouldn’t be broken when I find out that he has been meddling with other ladies.” She sighed and sat down.
“How come you have never told me this?”
She laughed. “How would I tell you my plan is to play you? I love the fact that you are a kind of person who does not act anyhow with just anyone.”
“If I start my own story, you will get tired before I finish the whole story. I think I will just keep the necessary details for some other day but most importantly, Debbie packed out yesterday night.” He told her.
“What!” Her eyes bulged. “Because of ring?”
Koku grinned. “No. She already filed the divorce papers and everything behind my back. She just dropped the papers with me and left. Though she noticed I was on my ring and mentioned it, I first felt that the ring fell while I was helping a colleague repair her flat tire on my way home then you called and told me you had the ring.”
“You are a good man, Koku. But what pushed you to flirting with me at first?”
He chueckled. “Did I flirt? I just liked your person. I was tired of Debbie and her overly spiritual acts. I love Debbie but she has never made things easy for me. Again, why would a married woman who is pregnant walk out of her marriage?”
“Wow! She is pregnant already?”
Koku nodded. “Yes, she is. She’s pregnant, Tina and she walked away.”
“What happened? You have never told me this aspect of her, all you have ever told me is that she’s a good woman, this and that. I have always suspected though that your words are just mere words without the joy and comfort of the home you present that you have. You know that there is no matter how you try, you can’t hide the joy that comes with a happy home.”
Koku sighed.
“You know that day you came to the clinic, she never called, no text message, nothing. I saw how you got your phone to check if there was any missed call or text message and when you didn’t find any, you smiled and told me you wanted to come here. I suspected something wasn’t right even though I didn’t know what exactly. No truly happy man would say with his mouth that he has a happy home and wouldn’t be happy to go to that home.”
“I try my best to hide it.”
“I have once been in these shoes, so I know what it smells like.”
Koku chuckled. “Like I said, I cannot go into the explanation in details tonight. The talk is for another day. I have to go home right now.”
“You still haven’t told me why you didn’t go to South Africa.”
He grinned. “I will tell you that one too later.”
“Okay. Actually, the estate main gate would have been locked by now. We have to pass this side.” She stretched her hand, showing the part of the road she was explaining.
“I don’t know the way.”
“Why don’t you sleep here? I don’t intend to do anything messy.”
He chuckled. “Let me just go home.”
“Okay, maybe we should reach the main gate and beg the gatekeepers to let you pass.”
“What of that other way? Would they have locked it too?”
“No, but it is far and long.”

She shrugged. “What did you do? Please let’s go.” She led the way as they stepped outside.
It was barely ten minutes after Tina got back home that her phone buzzed and it was Koku. “Have you gotten home? How come…”
“I am on my way back to your place, Tina. There’s an emergency.”
“What is it?” Tina was already scared.
“I can’t explain. I am coming right back.” He said to the receiver and dropped the call.

EPISODE FOUR

Koku’s car stopped and Tina opened the door quickly. “What’s up?” She asked him and watch him carry something from the other side of the car. It was a human. Her mind had already thought about different things as she watched him bring the body near her.
“Please open the gate wider.” Koku told her.
She opened the door wider and stepped aside. She peeped outside to watch if anyone saw him as he entered the house with the body but she didn’t see anyone. She heaved a sigh of relief. “Did you knock him down?” She asked as she locked the gate slowly.
“No.” Koku replied and entered the living room while she hurried after him.
“What happened?” Tina asked him as she entered.
Koku had sprawled the body on the floor. “I saw the body struggling for his life. I was even scared maybe it was a trap of kidnappers or maybe thieves. I had looked away when I just heard some sounds and two ladies ran inside the car and drove off.” He replied.
“Which side of the road did you meet him?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know how to explain but there was another path by the right asides the path you led me to, so I guess that’s where these ladies passed there.”
“Did you see the ladies?”
“No. I didn’t even see their faces. I got to know they were ladies by their scream as they hopped into the car and drove away.” He replied. “Please save this young man.”
Tina took a look at the body and froze. “Ayo!” She exclaimed.
“Do you know him?” Koku asked.
“The guy I was talking to you less than an hour ago. That guy I mentioned his name as Ayo.” She reminded him.
“Wow.”
“I can’t treat him here. This is too heavy and he has lost so much blood. We have to rush him to the hospital.” She told Koku.
“Isn’t it dangerous to take him by ourselves? What of police?”
She shrugged. “I am a Doctor, I have my ID with me and beyond thinking about the police, we have to save him as well.”
Koku gushed long air from his lungs.

“What did we just do, Debbie?” Sade peeped outside for the last time before she locked the door and turned around to watch Debbie on the sofa with her hands on her head.
“What question did you just ask me, Sade? You know you just killed a whole human right now, right? You just wasted a life!”
Sade snapped. “Please, don’t place it all on my head. Didn’t we go and dispose the body together?”
“Oh, you can be saying this now, right? So your mouth can open and this rubbish can come out of it, is that not?”
“Just stop all these, Debbie! The deed has been done, we are meant to be thinking about the way out, not complicating things beyond repair.”
Debbie shrugged. “The way out of what?”
“Someone saw us, have you forgotten?”
“No one saw us. Whoever that fellow was, he didn’t see us.”
Sade laughed hysterically. “You feel? We didn’t even get the opportunity to see if it was a guy or a lady.”
“It couldn’t have been a lady, Sade. What would a lady be looking for in that forest at night? If not for the bad thing we went to do, who told you we would be in that bush as well?”
Sade stood up and paced back and forth the living room. She was still covered with sweat as though she was seeing the fellow who saw them while they dumped the body. She shivered as her mind crossed another thing. “What if it was Ayo?” She asked.
Debbie glared at her. “Who is Ayo?”
“The guy who died. What if it was his spirit that we saw, Debbie?”
Debbie hissed. “We were holding the body of the guy in our hands and his spirit was standing before us, right? You know the spirit has turned to a commentator, he came to see how we would dump the body. Please, those thing only happen in Nollywood movies. Please.”
“Debbie, I am scared.”
Debbie hissed again. “We would have saved ourselves from all these if we had just rushed him to the hospital instead.”
“I was simply concerned about us then, Debbie. I was thinking of the repercussions if police should get hold of us. You know all these, don’t you?”
Debbie clasped her hands. “So why are you getting scared all of a sudden?”
“Who knows if whoever saw us trailed us home?”
Debbie stood up. “I am going inside the room, I am sick and tired of all these assumptions and baseless fear.”
“Debbie! Are you not scared anymore?”
“We have done the worse already, I don’t even know.” She walked away.

Tina already made some calls before she set out of the house with Koku. She had hung her lab coat by the backseat of her car and also placed her ID CARD right beside her. Koku was seated beside her and in no time, they got to the hospital without meeting any officer on the way. They made sure they prepared for the worst that could happen because of the dubious acts of the officers.
Ayo was rushed into the clinic while she followed the stretcher on which he was laid and Koku sat by the reception. He soon began to pace around the reception too as the scene kept flashing back to his mind. He wasn’t trying to remember nor guess any of the faces he saw, he was just wondering why two ladies would wound a guy and decide to come and dump him in the bush. What if he didn’t pass that path to his house that night, that guy might just struggle in pain till he would breathe his last.
He sat down again and glanced at the hospital wall clock occasionally. He was grateful he has been fired from his work already, so no thought of how he would get to his place of work very early in the morning. He just remembered that he had removed the mobile phone in Ayo’s pocket and kept it in his own pocket. He brought it out and tried to access it but it had password. He just kept the phone back in his pocket and watched, hoping that Tina would soon be back with a good news.
Tina came out of the ward after thirty minutes. She looked pale and tired. “Hey Koku.” She tapped Koku who was lost in thought.
“How far?” He jolted back and focused on her.
She nodded. “He’s stable now. I guess he was hit by something, maybe a glass. He is fine for now but I am just concerned that he might end up having amnesia.”
Koku thinned his eyes. “Is that not total forgetfulness?”
She nodded. “Some cases have partial forgetfulness.”
“So you feel he might not be able to remember you, right?”
She tittered. “What importance would it be for him to remember me? I am talking about him remembering whoever did this to him?”
“You know his mobile phone has password and one can’t even get through to see whatever might be there.”
“I just pray he would be fine to the end.”
“You still feel things might grow worse?”
She chuckled. “We only try our best, Koku. You know we can wake up tomorrow now and just meet his dead body.”
Koku sighed. “What of internal bleeding?”
“Tests would still be carried out when he fully stable, the doctors just tried to stabilize him for now.”
“Okay.”

“Everything was turning on its own before me, Sade. I am not sure I can stay alone in that room.” Debbie announced as she rushed back to the living room to meet Sade.
“Same thing is happening here, I was thinking I should come and meet you in the room because I am getting terrified already.”
“We haven’t cleaned the blood stain on the floor, we haven’t checked the car and also our clothes, Sade.”
“I am tired, Debbie.”
“Wait, what came over you the other time that made your heart so strong and now you are already shivering?”
“I don’t know. I just know that I didn’t want to go to jail and we are done with that aspect.”
“We have to clean everything and discard whatever it is that might be an evidence, we never know what can happen later.”
“Like? You feel someone saw us, right?”
“Didn’t someone see us?”
“No, I am not talking about when we dropped the body, I am talking about now. You know how all these murder stuffs work out, they will be asking questions up and down and it is possible that someone from the next building heard that we went out and…”
“Debbie, please stop!”
Debbie heaved a sigh.
“We will clean everything tomorrow morning, I am tired already.” Sade waved it away.
“Even I, but we have to do the needful. Don’t let us push it away the way we did and dumped the body.”
“All I know is that we will survive.”

Tina and Koku paid some bills that midnight and decided to spend the night inside the car parked in the hospital compound because it was too late to go back home already. Tina still met some Doctors and had some words with them before she stepped out with Koku.
“You said the phone has password, right?”
“Yes.” Koku replied.
“Give it to me.” Tina collected the phone. “He has changed his phone.” She told him.
“Really? Do you know the password?”
“I knew the password, he wasn’t using a phone that has fingerprint then.”
“But it should still have a password backup.” Koku swiped the screen up and it brought out the phone keyboard. “Enter the password you know and let us see.”
They stood by the car as Tina entered Ayo’s phone number.
“Isn’t that a phone number?” Koku asked.
“It is Ayo’s phone number and I can still remember till now.” She smiled. “It is still the password, I have unlocked it.”
“Really?” Koku grinned as he collected the mobile phone and clicked the call log icon. He saw the last three numbers he had called. “He called Sade, Patricia and Electrician.”
“What do you feel we should do?” Tina asked.
“Do you know any Sade in his life before you guys broke up?”
Tina shook her head. “I don’t know any Sade, I don’t know Patricia as well but you know it is possible that he saved a lady’s number with electrician, right?”
Koku grinned. “Bad guy. I know.”
Tina grinned. “He did it a lot.” Her mind drifted back to those days. “He would save the number of someone with delivery guy and trust me, the fellow is a lady.” They laughed.
“So are we to suspect the electrician?”
Tina shrugged. “Maybe.” They laughed again.
“But I just remembered I know a Sade.”
“Abeg, there are too many Sade in the world than for us to assume. Let’s get some rest before I go check on him again.” Tina laughed.
“That’s true.” They entered the vehicle.
