Dear Nairalanders,

I need your help in making a decision.

So I intend to buy my first car and all my friends and family give me the impression that all other cars are 'bad' except Toyota.

I do not want to believe this and I actually intend to buy Honda baby boy because I love Honda cars from what I read.

If you have truly used any Honda Accord before please put me through your experience with the car and what to expect;

Are Honda cars really bad?
The ball socket joint that I read and hear about, is it true? How can one prevent it?
Is the fuel consumption economical ?
The transmission issue i read and hear about Honda, is true? How can one prevent it?
Are the parts available and affordable?
Is it true that when it travels a very long distance, the gear box is affected?

I need help from genuine Honda users because I got too much discouragement from 'Toyota' people around. Please (Honda users only, I've heard enough about Toyota)

Please help a brother. I need advise. God bless.

I would post my own experience on a Honda babyboy that I used, what I can say is that if u buy a car that was abused from anyone,u wud not enjoy it.I bought my babyboy from Abuja and the owner bought it tokunbo and used it for 4years before I bought it,the previous owner did not abuse the car and seriously am really enjoying it.If u follow all manufacturers advice on fluids and regular checks and maintainace u would not have issues with Honda baby boy.And for your information I pass thru bad roads on a daily basis and I have never experienced a leg pull, when using babyboy if u hear noise on ur front wheels, drive to a mech for inspection so u can know what to fix....no doubt Honda requires more care than a Toyota but the shocks and stability on road when on speed is worth it.The parts are affordable and easy to get,its being almost a year I got mine and no regrets whatsoever ,I drive the 1999 model and want to sell it to get an EOD.Babyboy is fuel economical as far as everything is in good shape.Just take along a good mech to inspect any one u want to buy.

Honda cars are very good cars and I can tell you that. I used acura 3.2tl 1998 model as my first car I bought it direct from Cotonou and used it for 4years. Throughout 4years of good usage I didn't have any issues at all.
I latter changed to Honda accord (the baby boy you are planning to buy) and it was wao despite buying it second hand from someone. I sold it and bought acura 3.2 tl 2003 model which I am using now. The truth is that there's no car that is not good it's just the owner that made them bad because of the bad maintenance system they have. So if you want to go for Honda baby boy, and you are buying used one then you need to do due diligence before buying and cultivate a very good maintenance habit for your car. I'm planning to buy another acura but this time a TSX. I just love Honda cars.

If this is the first car u are gonna use in ur life.. no experience at all in taking care of vehicles either from Mum, dad or uncle... as in ur first shot at owning and maintenance.... don’t start with a Honda baby boy....clearly, it looks like u have low budget in the jurisdiction of Nigerian used

Try pencil light (camry 1997), 1999 Rav4, and if it must be a Honda..make sure it’s a Honda hala, one rugged piece of machinery u will never regret..

Honda baby boy was my first car. It was imported from canada with 159k miles. Sweet car. I owned the 01 v6 accord for about 5 years before my friend bought it at 200k miles. Here is my take. You should note i treat my cars like they are living things.

Overall it is a great car. Very economical. Reliable too. Wont cost you much to maintain. All through my using it the legs never pulled. I changed the shocks every year (thanks to our roads). Excellent fuel economy for a 6 plugs engine awesome.

But Unless you are like me that puts performance above anyother thing i will advice you avoid the v6.
Honda Baby boy transmission (gear) is prone to failing so for it to last USE THE RECOMMENDED TRANSMISSION FLUID !!!! If you can i will advice you go for a good foreign used one. Nice car but it has gear issues. Will i choose it over its pencil light counterpart? Anyday.

You like a Honda, buy a Honda. Any car sucks if you don't take care of it. I drive an Acura (Honda) and I'm happy.

I own a Toyota camry 2001 and A baby boy 2002 (fourth Baby boy I'm owning).
Both were bought Naija used.
I am glad pple and now liking the Honda babyboy.
Leg pull... I have seen Benz, Sequoia, highlander 01/02, Camry 99, 02 hummer jeep with my very eyes have a leg pull.
Summary... It is not about the car.... It the carelessness of the driver.
I'm sure dey must AV felt I'm not driving a Honda so the legs cannot put.

HONDA!!!!

Please inspect carefully with an expert before buying any second hand Honda.

The only Honda I used that I enjoyed is Honda CIVIC. It did Abuja to Lagos twice before I sold. Very Strong Honda.

As for others, I used Honda Accord, ACADEMY! When the car wanted to kill me, I sold it at very cheap price. NOTE: I didn't do thorough inspection before buying the Accord.

Now enjoying my Toyota Camry.

From my experience dont use a babyboy.....if you decide to...expect to do a gear box change anytime soon...or drive your car with a hard jerk when you put it on drive to move. the leg issue is something to look out for though i never experienced it on my babyboy because i took care of the legs but the gearbox....thats something you should be ready for...

You have have use a poorly maintained gearbox.
I have different esperience

- that once that start so smooth and after a while the downshift is so bad that it delays in selecting when u come to and abrupt stop
- the one that "selects from one to two" with a huge jerk .. very common
- The once that always jump btw gear 3 and gear 4 when on highway.

Infact i had given up that you can never have a babyboy with perfect gear
the current one i use... the selection is perfect ( a naija used) even after driving for 3 hours straight)

it boils down to one thing... MAINTENANCE

Even though i Have not service the current gear and have been using it for over months from purchase.

Mr man go for baby boy u will enjoy it so much.the fuel very economical. I even wonder if my Babyboy uses water sometimes. As for the leg u pay attentions to it once u hear noise u drive straight to ur mechanics an change ur shaft or ball joint. All cars get their problem it is bad maintenance culture that make people condemned a particular brand of car.Honda get one if the strongest engine so far.I believed my good points will guide you during purchased of ur Honda.

The only issue I've had so far is the ball joint thing. So what I do is this; I buy extra ball joints and keep in my car just in case... But before anything even happens I change both ball joints every 3-4 months. Apart from that, I don't have any major issue just normal maintenance

Well, I've only had ball joint issue ONCE. And that was a few months after I bought the car. So in order to avoid the disappointment of ball joint issue I personally took it upon myself to change every 3 months not because I persistently had the issue.

Secondly, I probably had the ball joint issue because the former owner had not changed it in while. I did not change it immediately I bought it.
