Residents of Bergen County in New Jersey, US, where detained activist, Omoyele Sowore, is said to be resident, have demanded his release from custody.

Mr Sowore is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) on charges of treasonable felony and other sundry offences.

NJ.com reports that residents of the county will on Monday evening gather at Haworth Borough Hall to demand Sowore’s release.

Speaking on the gathering, Haworth Councilwoman Heather Wasser said: “We want the federal government paying attention. We want the United Nations paying attention. We want him out of Nigeria safely.”

Congressman Josh Gottheimer, who represents the district that Sowore resides in, said he is looking into the matter.

“We’re in touch with the State Department on this matter and we’re speaking with the family regularly,” Gottheimer said in a statement.

Sowore is said to be a green card holder.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on October 11 reduced the bail conditions granted Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare.

Sowore is being accused of plotting to overthrow the government through a nationwide protest themed #RevolutionNow.

One I know cannot even pay his rent but is busy carrying woman up and down on daily basis.

This is the bane of Nigeria. It is what got Sowore's former friend, Buhari, into power.

Buhari has NO business being in power in the 21st century. Even committed theocracies such as Saudi have educated, exposed leaders. Guess what? They have light 24 hours a day, the basic for any serious, forward-thinking country.

Buhari got into power in 2015 because of Nigerians have a sworn affinity for tribalism. For 2019, Atiku, a democrat, would be much better than him. Everyone knows this. But because of tribalism, Nigerians have refused to ratchet up support for his Supreme Court apperance, instead happy to suffer in silence. The North and South West are largely silent in the face of this governmentlessness in Nigeria because of deep-seethed tribalism. Their respective kinsmen are in power. So they keep quiet while they cry out as SARS, bad road, Fulani herdsmen terrorists brutalise them while Buhari jamborees around the world. I am ashamed that the South West is docile and silent while Sowore, a South Western is in jail over trumped up treason charges. So, so, so ashamed.
