So arsenal got a controversial draw at the weekend and of cus I was pissed,..I am arsenal fan. But not to be biase, my observations with the var, system in England is somehow different from that of other leagues.

Some few general observations and specific relating to England.

General note..#1

I thought the var system was about objectivity. Less subjectivity. A ball touches a players hands, if it's clear enough that it's a handball in the box, give it as a penalty but Apparently the ref still has an input if the handball is intentional or not. I still don't get. There are clear cases of handballs that were not given..like that of Nigerian vs. Agentina at the world cup. And there were those outrageously given like that of man. Vs psg. I don't get. What criteria they use in judgement.

On the specific side, England seem to be the only league with a var team that is not led by the center ref. In other leagues like LA Liga or serial A, ones an incident is spotted the attention of the center ref is drawn to it. He is immidiately required to go and check the screen for clarity as such. In the end he is still the one to make the final decision. He can still go with his initial decision or revoke it.

With england, the var team seem almost independent or autonomouse. Having power to upturn the ref decision At will. The arsenal game at the week was a case in point.

The ref is not allowed to visit the screen. Rather the game is paused with notice on the big screen that may read.." checking penalty" or whatever the incident may be. Once the var team concludes their find, There is a new notice on the screen which the ref has to comply with. He is not to approach the screen to check if his initial decision was right or wrong.

So in my view it seem that there is a third ref whose decision supercedes that of the center ref. Am not here to argue the rightness of wrongness of this acts. Am just seeking opinion on why the different approach. Why not uniform.

You have made very sensible observations. One thing I have noticed about football is, once an incident has not affected the Whites in a negative manner (Frank Lampard's shot against Germany at the world cup) they don't bother to adjust the rules....

Nigeria once had a decisive penalty kick which hit the bar, bounced beyond the goal line and bounced out... What did CAF or FIFA did? Nothing... Although there are numerous instances like this.
My point is that there is a third ref who is deciding for the center ref .. This means a match could easily be compromised. Until the English suffer from this manner of approach they won't see a reason to adjust

I don't know my guy. I even thought it should have been a penalty to arsenal. Chambers was first on the ball. BUT non the less the ref first instinct was point to the center circle, then var step in. .

Yes you are right @ the original poster.

The VAR application in the EPL is different from as obtainable in the other leagues.

And the policy was actually meant to checkmate unnecessary time wasting by the center referees in going to check the VAR outlets on the sidelines as shown during the ARSENAL VS CRYSTAL PALACE game on Sunday.

But everything is about to change for the better now because the EPL officials have scheduled a meeting within in the next 3 weeks over the policy review to allow the center referees to observe the VAR outlets themselves before any final decisions are to be made.

This is official as read from an article today on an Arsenal website.

Myself being an Arsenal fan to the core and a proud Nairalander.

Although I have been viewing and reading as a guest for getting to 2 years now but decided to login today because of this your post as observed.

No. There isn't any 3rd referee anywhere. the reason is as stated in my previous post above
