Re: FG Orders NCC To Reduce Costs Of Data In Nigeria by vezycash(m):
People complaining about MTN are being unfair. I don't want to use the word IGNORANT. Let's just say less technically inclined. I have tools to measure my data consumption locally and there are just two areas MTN cheats data in my findings

1. MTN night browsing plan. They claim it's 50 naira for 500MB but it's actually 480MB
2. IFF you manage your data and still have some left after the 30 days, MTN will start magic. NCC has directed that network providers should give 15 days extra... Because of this, they'll do wayo once the original time has passed.

Apart from these MTN is pretty aite...

Those crying foul are always on Instagram, Facebook, snapcat and YouTube. Here's the kicker, if you watch a video with both MTN and slow glo, your data consumption will be different.

If your internet is fast, Youtube will serve you 1080p or even 4k videos. But if it's crawling and slow like glo, then, they'll serve you 240p or even 144p. In English, this means that a 2 minute video @4k resolution can cost 200MB but just 3MB @144p.

When browsing the internet, the same thing happens. The size of most sites is about 10MB currently. Pictures alone can be 10MB. JavaScript another 3-5mb. And that's without any video. If you're connecting with slow internet, pictures will not load, JavaScript will just give up. But if your internet is fast...

Unless our internet becomes as cheap as India's Jio network, it's still going to be very expensive. I applaud the minister for this directive. However, a better way to get this data cost down is to go to india and woo the CEO of JIO to come to 9ja. Give the old man tax break for 20 years to offset the initial investment.

For those who remember - MTN and Airtel sim used to be 10k. Until glo came in and dropped it to 100 naira. MTN said that per second billing was TECHNICALLY INFEASIBLE but implemented it within a month when GLO did it.

Credible competition is what we need to get this stuff down.

Those people quoting the high prices of western internet are 419 people. American, British internet is different from ours. It comes with unlimited text messaging and phone calls.

Not only that, most people don't mind because they are using unlimited wired internet.

NCC are exploiting Nigerians, we have a big market, so they make more in Nigeria in terms of marginal profits, when compared to other markets, yet they charge us exploitatively.

Telcos are big scammers.

How can you ask me to buy data of 3GB that is supposed to last for 30 days?

Meanwhile, deep down you know it cannot last more than a week even for a non-heavy user
Re: FG Orders NCC To Reduce Costs Of Data In Nigeria by elefind(m): 11:53am On Nov 06, 2019
Reference:
He absolutely has no right to regulate prices by fiat. Telecommunications is a business in Nigeria and business rates are always determined by negotiation through the NCC which is the primary stskeholder acting on behalf of the general citizenry by interfacing with government.

Negotiation means the NCC too has to come to the table wirh incentives to the telecos to expand, develop, profit and thus reduce prices. That is how business is safely conducted.
To an extent the NCC can regulate price, if they can't regulate price why is every petroleum or gas stations selling the same price? it simply means the price has been regulated by the agencies Involve.

NCC should make an app and mandate service providers to subscribe to it for data usage monitoring.

The global average of 1GB data plan is $8.53.
Zimbabwe pays the highest price in the world at $75.20 per 1GB, followed closely by Equatorial Guinea at $65.83, Saint Helena at $55.47 and Djibouti at $37.92.

Cheering news

the way and manner these network people siphon my data especially airte and mtn leaves me maniacally bewildered .
Re: FG Orders NCC To Reduce Costs Of Data In Nigeria by grandstar(m): 1:45pm On Nov 06, 2019
I don't support this action. The free market should be respected. Let the market achieve that itself by creating enough competition.

Prices are already going down. I buy 2 gig of MTN data lasting for 2 days and I watch as much video as possible on Youtube using the app Youtube Go. Please download the app. Just thank me later.

Most countries that enjoy unlimited broadband access have lots of wire cable connection. Cable wire is the best and most cost effective transmitter of broadband access. That is quite scarce here due to the fact that only 400,000 phone lines existed in the country as of Year 2000.
