Authorities have rescued 64 victims of human trafficking and people smuggling during an INTERPOL-coordinated operation in Mali.

The victims – mostly women and girls – were rescued from sexual exploitation forced labour in the mining sector, as well as forced begging.

Operation Horonya, which means ‘freedom’ in Bambara, took place from 3 to 11 October to support the Malian authorities to identify and dismantle the criminal groups operating in the country and more widely across the region.

Police also conducted raids at known trafficking and smuggling hotspots in the country. The nearly 70 victims identified and rescued came from Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali and Nigeria and were working in bars, homes and mining sites.

Among them were three young boys rescued from an illegally operated Koranic school, where they were allegedly forced to beg for money. Four suspected traffickers have been detained awaiting sentencing. .

Mali serves as major transit country for human traffickers who target the most vulnerable members of society. Investigations are ongoing to identify additional suspects.

"The victims – mostly women and girls– were rescued from sexual exploitation forced labour in the mining sector, as well as forced begging."

Did they ask to be rescued? Lousy half baked Journalism. Please name the so called victims. I call on NCAN members to do the needful and conclude this story.

Karma is not bound by boundary.
After thumbprinting their sugar daddies into power, they decided to run away from the menace.

They should have headed for the Middle east or Asia, as the issue of being used as almajiri or labourers on mining sites would be out of their duty. That way, they will never complain of being sex starved.

I wish they could be deported back to their lovely country with the speed of light so they could meet up with the Lagos Women run. The country is still as lovely as the way they left it. There is no reason for anyone to run away.

Sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side.

Many have died, are dying and will still die, all in search for greener pastures.

You'll be surprised that more than half of those women knew what they signed up for before making that trip to Mali.

The real problem only starts when they begin to realise that perhaps the 'stress' is not worth the money. And maybe they should have been contented with their former lives.

Unfortunately, poverty, illiteracy and avarice always becloud the judgement of such people in search of a 'better life'.

With all the advert and campaign against traficking and fake Agents, with all the horible tales of stranded individuals and returnee

someone somewhere is still embarking on such trips and they blame poverty or government instead of stupidity and sheer greed

If its a western country, we could understand but mali ? I'm sure mali is just about 18 million people. even Buhari and atiku score in the last selection pass thier population. And do you know the worst? mali is a landLocked country. So why is Nigeria saying Biafra will be landLocked but here they are Trouping into a landLocked mali What is going on? gidgiddy must hear this
